Advanced Turbo Intercooling

It’s the ’80s, and everything has a ‘Turbo’ badge, because turbos are cool. But you know what’s cooler than a turbo? Advanced Turbo Intercooling, that’s what. And it wasn’t a European sports car or Japanese techno-fest that pioneered it, but Dutch truck-maker DAF.

The DAF 3600 FTG ATi was one of the first to feature an intercooled turbocharged diesel engine, which – in top trim – made a hefty 370bhp. And it had a hypoid drive axle, which sounds nearly as cool as Advanced Turbo Intercooling.

This incredible Model Team example comes from previous bloggee Nanko Klein Paste, and it is stunning in its realism. Based on a real DAF 3600 FTG ATi operated by ‘G.J. van Die’, Nanko has replicated every detail, including applying excellent custom decals to recreate the livery worn by its life-size counterpart.

Just one image is available at the time of writing but it’s well worth checking out, showing both this astonishing creation as well as the real truck it replicates so beautifully. Click the link above to visit Nanko’s photostream and spool up your turbo.

Daffy Truck

Here at The Lego Car Blog we recently added the whole A to Z of Lego Trucks to the site. Well, D to Z, as we started with DAF. Anyway, here’s another entry into the DAF archive, thanks to prolific DAF-builder Arian Janssens and his superb 1980s DAF FAS 3600 ATI. Pictured with a drawbar trailer and a variety of loads, you can find all the imagery at Arian’s Flickr album. Take a look via the link above, or alternatively click here for every time a DAF truck has appeared here, mostly courtesy of Arian.

Really Very Long

Much like a Genesis piano solo, today’s creation is very ’80s, and really very long indeed. This DAF F241-Series Space Cab by Flickr’s Arian Janssens includes an enormous three-axle drop-side trailer, complete with a crane mounted in the middle, and its own steering – such is its length. The truck’s rather impressive too and you can check both truck and trailer at Arian’s ‘DAF FTG ATI Space Cab’ album via the link above, whilst we congratulate ourselves on making it through this post without referencing a johnson.

Becoming Bacon

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… Don’t worry, TLCB will remain resolutely unChristmassy until December, but if some of the residents close to TLCB Towers are anything to go by, it’s already December 23rd.

Cue a tenuous link to today’s creation, a DAF FAC 3600 ATI 8×2 Space Cab livestock transport by regular bloggee Arian Janssens, which is quite a mouthful. Although that’s fitting, because so too is what it would transport.

Designed to take pigs from a life on the farm too, er… the sausage factory – and to segway back to the start of this post – is there any purpose more noble than to become a tasty Christmas snack and hasten the onset of heart disease and high cholesterol in glutenous holiday partygoers?

Exactly. These pigs are the heroes we need, and there’s more to see of their magnificent final-journey’s chariot on Flickr via the link.

Go Long

Lego DAF 3600 8X4 ATI Van Seumeren

Last night your Mom put in a request, and thanks to Flickr’s Arian Janssens we’re happy to oblige. This 1980s DAF 3600 ATi 8×4 is seriously long, thanks to the truly enormous beam being transported between itself and the support trailer.

The whole rig is brilliantly detailed and features an accurate livery of the company that operated the truck in Holland back in the ’80s. There is lots more to see of the DAF 3600 ATi, the trailer, and the colossal beam being transported at Arian’s photostream – click the link above to go long.
