Persian Cat

War is complicated. However much Fox News try to dumb it down into a simple ‘goodies vs. baddies’ fight, it is rarely – if ever – the reality.

Take this for example, the American F-14A ‘Tomcat’ fighter, which is flown by the Iranian Air Force. Yup, the very same Iran that the U.S threatens to wipe off the map every six weeks.

Because not very long ago Iran were on the side of the U.S. in the first Gulf War, if not for their comradeship with America more their hatred of Iraq.

Not that Fox News remembers that of course. Anyway, this rather brilliant Republic of Iran Air Force F14-A ‘Persian Tomcat’ comes from regular bloggee Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist), who has replicated the real Iranian fighter – including its desert camouflage – in stunning realism.

You can head to Ralph’s F-14A album on Flickr to see the full gallery of excellent imagery, plus you can read his Master MOCers interview here at TLCB by clicking here.

Lego US Navy Aircraft

Flickr’s Dornbi has appeared here numerous times with his stunning Lego aircraft. He’s recently pictured three of his historic US Navy planes together, with the F14a Tomcat, A-6E Intruder and A-7E Corsair all faithfully recreated in grey and white bricks. There’s more to see of each at Dornbi’s photostream – click there for the full set of images.

Big Cat

Lego F-14A Tomcat

We don’t blog planes all that much here at The Lego Car Blog, but sometimes a model arrives that is so stupendously brilliant that we forget our car bias for a bit. This is one of those times.

This magnificent creation is a 1:15 scale, 8,000 piece replica of the formidable carrier-based F-14A ‘Tomcat’. It’s been built over the last 9 months crash_cramer of Flickr, and it’s a truly remarkable build. With LEGO Power Functions operating various aeronautical functionality, custom LED engine sequencing, custom decals, and a vacuum-formed canopy, the attention to detail, even if it’s not quite all LEGO, is astonishing.

The whole model measures well over 1.2 metres long and it’s really worth a closer look. You can see all of the incredible images on Flickr – click the link above and wind the catapult back.

Too Close For Missiles, I’m Switching To Guns

Lego Top Gun F-14 Tomcat

Simultaneously the most homo-erotic* and brilliant film of all time, 1986’s Top Gun is the best airplane movie ever made. Starring Tom Cruise (before he got all annoying) and Anthony Edwards as Top Gun students Maverick and Goose, plus Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan, it was such a box office smash that the coked-up producers even remade it a few years later with the exact same plot and set it in NASCAR**.

This wonderful recreation of Maverick and Goose’s F-14 Tomcat (complete with Maverick and Goose themselves) is the work of TLCB regular and Lego building genius Ralph Savelsberg. With the best detailing you’re likely to see this year it’s well worth flying over to Flickr to see the full gallery. Join us there by clicking the link.
