Double Head

This bizarre machine is a 1984 DAF ‘Double-Head’, built to compete in the Paris-Dakar rally by Dutch driver Jan de Rooy, who wanted more power than one DAF truck could provide. So he used two.

Joining two 11.6 litre DAF 3300s back-to-back behind the cabs, Jan created a twin-engined all-wheel-drive 13-ton behemoth, and one of the strangest Dakar competitors to ever enter.

Sadly the DAF ‘Double-Head’ failed to finish, but it set the template for Jan de Rooy to refine the idea and return with a vehicle that would go on to become a Dakar legend…

But we’ll stay in 1984 for now, courtesy of this spectacular recreation of the DAF ‘Double-Head’ by Flickr’s p.vanderloo, who has replicated not just the truck’s mad exterior but its drivetrain too.

Double Dump

We’re dumping double today, courtesy of regular bloggee Arian Janssens and this brilliant DAF FAS 3300 DKX in ‘Bas Van Buuren’ livery.

A huge tipping bucket is mounted behind that DAF FAS’s cab, whilst behind that a drawbar trailer is fitted with a second enormous tipper.

Both are exceptionally well detailed and presented (although we’re not sure you’d dump the load from the truck whilst the trailer was hitched…) and there’s more to see of the whole rig at Arian’s photostream. Take a look via the link whilst we congratulate ourselves on successfully avoiding a minefield of double-entendre.

Pallet Puller

This neat DAF FAS 3300 truck and drawbar trailer was discovered on Flickr today. Constructed by DAF-building specialist Arian Janssens this classic DAF looks like it can haul a lot of wooden pallets. Or another couple of DAFs as it turns out. See more at Arian’s photostream via the link.

The Bull

Back in the 1980s the Paris Dakar Rally was a very different proposition to how it is today. GPS hadn’t been invented and the race was as much about navigation as speed. European manufacturers were taking the event seriously though, and creating purpose built machines. Dutch truck builder DAF joined the race in 1985 with their heavily modified 3300 off-road truck, driven by Jan de Rooy. ‘The Bull’ as it was known finished in 2nd place within the truck category, and we bet it looked bloody cool doing so.

Nanko Klein Paste shows us how The Bull looked with his awesome recreation in Lego form. Utilising four Power Functions medium motors for drive and with some monster suspension, Nanko’s Technic version of the Dutch legend looks as capable off road as any Lego model is likely to get.
