The release of LEGO’s Model Team line in the late-’80s / early-90’s (depending where you live) was a momentous shift in the trajectory LEGO building. Aimed at older children, the three debut sets in the Model Team range took the visual realism of LEGO to a whole new level compared to the simple blocky sets that were the limit just a few years before. The 5580 Highway Star set is perhaps the most iconic of those early offerings, and previous bloggee SvenJ. is giving us strong reminiscing vibes with his fantastic Peterbilt 359 flatbed truck (which is surely the real-world vehicle that inspired the original 5580 set). City Cargo

LEGO have created an intricate Town/City universe over the years, with their own energy brand, postal service, and railway company. There have also been a number of cargo/delivery companies over the years, usually featuring some sort of box-and-arrow logo and mini-figures wearing humiliating uniforms.

Cue LegoMarat’s excellent Model Team flatbed truck, based on none in particular but inspired by many, and proudly wearing LEGO’s ‘City Cargo’ box-and-arrow logo from the City set range.

The lovely detailing continues with ‘wooden’ planks lining the bed, life-like wheel bolts and reflective strip decals, opening doors and a detailed interior, and there are more superbly presented images to see at LegoMarat’s ‘Lego Flatbed Truck’ album on Flickr.

My Other Big Crane Truck’s a Big Crane Truck

This is a big crane truck, and it’s built from… er, a different big crane truck. Still, it is about as different from the source big crane truck as it can get, whilst still being a big crane truck itself.

Previous bloggee damjan97PL (aka damianPLE) is the builder who has converted the official LEGO Technic 42128 Heavy Duty Tow Truck set into a European flatbed truck, complete with a rather excellent rear-mounted folding crane.

The aforementioned crane can rotate, elevate and extend thanks to three pneumatically-operated booms, whilst the truck itself features working outriggers, an inline 6-cylinder engine underneath a tilting cab, ‘HOG’ steering, and dropping flatbed sides.

It’s a top quality (and brilliantly presented) B-Model, and one that owners of the 42128 set can create for themselves as building instructions are available. The Lego Car Blog Elves have been busy since their re-release after the Christmas break, so it was only a matter of time before one of them found a remotely controlled creation. Those you expecting a tale of mass Elven squashings will be disappointed though, as – excellent though this model is – it’s too slow to cause any Elven casualties, much to the annoyance of the Elf that discovered it.

However, now that we have the controls, it can be used to trundle a great multitude of Elves around TLCB Towers, which they’re enjoying very much.

Eurobricks’ damjan97PL (aka damianPLE) is the builder responsible for this rare moment of Elven calm, thanks to his fully RC 50cm long flatbed truck. An L motor provides the drive, a Servo the steering, and an M motor operates the third axle lift system via a clutch.

It’s an excellent build and one that you can create for yourself as building instructions are available, although you probably don’t have any Elves to transport. Head to the Eurobricks discussion forum for all the details.
