One Hundred Ways To Win!

Lego LUGNuts Competition

Hello LEGO Car Blog readers! Lino Martins here. Aside from being the outspoken front man and taskmaster over at LUGNuts, I have been a lot of things in my day: wine enthusiast, chubby chaser, mob informant, Pulitzer Prize winner, True Belieber, drug mule, part-time figure drawing model, prison snitch, gun-nut, cheese monger, interim fluffer, Olympic gold medalist, and backup dancer…but I have never been a writer for The LEGO Car Blog. Which is why that, thanks to a serious lapse in someone’s judgement (probably the Elves), I am honored that they let me take over the blog for this one post.

Now it’s about to get a bit more lowbrow around here and they probably won’t get the damage deposit back on this rental blog-writing studio, but I can assure you this is all for good reason. For all of February, LUGNuts will be running our 100th challenge called “100 Ways To Win”…a challenge so epic, we went back in time to 1582 to convince astronomers to give us one more day in this otherwise very short month. It’s totally true. I wouldn’t just make that up. We have a physicist who does that kind of stuff.

Anyway, how this works is you go on over to LUGNuts, (read the rules and whatnot), choose a number from 1-100 and, based on your chosen number, we will assign you an automotive task from a list of ideas that we have under lock and key. You build accordingly, play your cards right, and you may take home a totally awesome prize.

Over at LUGNuts, in life, and sometimes in the bathroom, we live by one policy: go big or go home! An epic challenge calls for epic prizes so the third place winner gets the LEGO Technic 42050 Drag Racer. Second place winner; we up the ante with the Technic 42039 24 Hours LeMans Race Car. For the first place winner we pull out all the stops with the Technic 42030 Remote-Controlled Volvo L350F Wheel Loader. Also, all three winners will get an autographed copy of The Art of LEGO Modeling, courtesy of Dennis Glaasker, Dennis Bosman and No Starch Press. I’m pretty sure winning a totally epic prize from a LUGNuts challenge will get you laid. (Claim void if you happen to be a youngin, live in Idaho, or if your belly protrudes from under your billowing renaissance fair shirt.)

How do we afford such huge prizes? We had a little help from our sponsors and friends at The Brothers-Brick, Constructibles, and the LUGNuts admins. Plus the judge ruled in my favor during that whole cheese mongering fiasco so I don’t have to worry about posting bail. What, did you think my brief stint as a drug mule would get me busted? Oh, HELL NO!

So head on over to LUGNuts to see what we have in store this February! Thanks, LEGO Car Blog for letting me use your blog-writing studio. Oh, and if some Chinese dudes in a van tell you I sold them fake Viagra, don’t believe them. Also cool water and salt will take the wine stains out of the carpet. Just sayin’.

Feeling Elvish

TLCB Summer Building Competition

Entries for TLCB Summer Building Competition keep on rolling in! Here are two more of our favourites that arrived this week.

Lego TLCB Summer Building Competition

First up (above) is Sam the First (aka Sir. Manperson)’s digital ‘Prowler’. We don’t often feature digital creations here, and Sam immediately put himself at a disadvantage in the competition by choosing to build in virtual reality. But Sam must really want the awesome prizes up for grabs and has gone all out to tick as many boxes on the Elves’ wishlist as possible. Bright colour? Check. Racing stripes? Check. Violence potential? Big check. He’s even added a pair of Elves to the build to score himself some bonus points. You can see more of Sam’s entry on Flickr at the link above.

Lego TLCB Competition Car

The second creation in today’s post comes from fellow Flickr builder and previous bloggee Calvin Sun. Calvin’s ‘Elves of Hazard’ model also ticks many of the Elves’ boxes, being brightly coloured, big engined and also featuring a rather suave-looking Elf (they really don’t look that good in reality). You can see more of Calvin’s competition entry on Flickr at the link above.

Prizes to be Won!

There are still several weeks to go in the competition, which closes on August 31st 2015. No-one has yet scored full marks, and we’re yet to see a Power Functions RC vehicle capable of Elf smushery entered – a remote control monster truck with racing stripes and an Elf at the wheel would stand a very good chance indeed.

All entries will be judged by TLCB Staff at the end of the competition and the winner will receive two of the brilliant Lego books pictured above from the awesome guys over at No Starch Press, plus the runner-up will also get their hands a top Lego publication too.

Summer Building Competition – Half Way!

TLCB Summer Building Competition

The Lego Car Blog Summer Building Competition, in partnership with Flickr’s LUGnuts and Headturnerz groups, is nearly half way through!

We’ve seen some excellent entries so far – here are few of our favourites to date that haven’t yet appeared on the blog…

Lego Technic F1 Car

This creation is one of the Elves’ favourites, ticking with the ‘fast’ and ‘violent’ boxes with a big thick marker. Greg Conroy has re-purposed the pieces within the official 42039 Technic set to build a mini-gun toting racing car. It’s sort of Mario Kart meets Formula 1, and that can only be a good thing. Greg has also included a couple of Elves to score some bonus points too. There’s more to see on Brickshelf – click here to check it out.

Next up we have a herd(?) of Mad Max-ish hot rods, with several builders taking this route to the Elves’ hearts. From left to right, _zenn‘s ‘Karma’ hot rod, Filip Gabryel‘s ’57 Chevy tow-truck, and Calvin Sun‘s post-apoc BMW.

Lego Mad Max Hot Rods

Alexander Paschoaletto, UndercoverWookiee and Sir. Manperson have also taken the hot rod route with their entries below.

Lego Hot Rods

The top row score highly for violence potential, whilst the bottom row earn some speed points, but with no Elves and few racing stripes included they can certainly be beaten to the prize-winning top spots.

One of TLCB staff picks so far is this very cleverly constructed Pagani Huayra from Flickr’s Yubnub. Whilst it features no Elves or racing stripes, it epitomises ‘Nice Parts Usage’, with hot dogs used in the most interesting way we’ve ever seen. OK, the second most interesting way, but we better not talk about the other one.

To view all of the competition entries so far, including those that have already featured here at TLCB, click the links to LUGnuts or Headturnerz above, or you can use the Search function at the foot of the page.

No entry has yet ticked all the boxes to score top marks, although a few are close (if that’s you – repost your model with an Elf of two / add some stripes and you might gain some more points!), and one builder definitely took the competition title a little too literally

The closing date for entries is the 31st of August 2015

One month to go!

TLCB Summer Building Competition is Open!

Lego Competition

After much teasing we’re delighted to announce that The Lego Car Blog’s first building competition commences today!

Build the Elves a Vehicle!

Someone (possibly these guys) tipped off the animal welfare officers that there may have been mistreatment of animals here at TLCB Towers. How that’s possible with fictional mythical creatures we don’t know, but the short of it is we need to prove that we look after the little sods that make up our unpaid workforce. And so… The Lego Car Blog Elves are about to get their Christmas and Birthdays all rolled into one!

To get us off the hook with the authorities we need you to build the Elves their perfect vehicle. Those of you who’ve been visiting this site for a while will know what they like, but for those of you that haven’t, think racing stripes, Transformers, guns, remote control, huge engines, or all of the above. There may also be bonus points available for incorporating an Elf or two into your entry.

How to Enter

We’ve teamed up with the wonderful guys over at LUGNuts and Headturnerz on Flickr to enable you to upload your entries via their discussion threads. Alternatively you can enter right here at TLCB by commenting with a link to your entry.

You may enter as many creations as you like, and the winners will be chosen based upon the designs that best meet the brief and our usual Submission Guidelines. We recommend using the Search function to discover more about what the Elves like, and a few hints may be dropped throughout the duration of the competition.

Prizes!

You can never read too much, and the awesome guys over at No Starch Press – purveyors of a large range of brilliant Lego books, have provided some excellent prizes for you to win!

The first place winner will have top choice of one of the three superb books pictured above. The second place runner up can choose between the remaining two books and the winner will also get their mitts on the remaining publication.

The Future’s Bright… The Future’s Orange

Lego McLaren

It’s an orangey sort of day here at TLCB Towers, as we now have two Elves contentedly munching on orange Smarties (they’re the best kind). Today’s second orange creation was discovered on Flickr, and it’s an entry into the Build a Future McLaren competition currently running at the LEGO ReBrick site that featured here earlier in the week.

All of the images of newcomer JAN LEGO‘s McLaren concept can be found on Flickr, and if you’d like to enter the competition yourself – and win some absolutely amazing prizes – click the link above to read the rules and how to enter. Get building!
