Grand Prix ’64

The year is 2064, and the Formula 1 has gone from strength to strength! The ’64 season features an amazing 42 races , 36 of which are in the United States, wherein the best drivers in the world (and Nicholas Latifi) battle to discover who the FIA’s Race Director will deem worthy of becoming World Champion!

Yuki Studona is hoping the fresh engines being fitted to his Octan Racing car in the final pitstop of the ’64 U.S. Grand Prix will give him the win, and he’ll be able to carry that momentum into next week’s ’64 U.S.A Grand Prix before the season wraps up in the Unites States in two weeks’ time.

Chess Surfing

Has anyone ever played chess whilst surfing? Probably. After all, there’s chess boxing, which is just as ridiculous, although you’re less likely to lose your pieces doing that.

Cue David Roberts‘ ‘Wipeout Racer’, named after a video game that’s named after a surfing fail, and coloured like a chess board. Or a British police car. Or a Victorian cake. Or TLCB Towers kitchen floor. But none of those made for a tenuous title link.

Anyway, David’s chess surfing spaceship is apparently coloured as it is to cause other pilots to crash, or ‘wipeout’… See, it all makes sense.

We’re effectively children here at TLCB, thus we find bright colours very stimulating, particularly when they’re deployed in a manner such as this. David Roberts‘ ‘Sunray’ takes its cues from the classic video game ‘Wipeout’ and there’s more to see of his superbly liveried anti-gravity racer at his photostream – click the link above make the jump.

This magnificent Octan Space Racer – imagined for the iconic video game ‘Wipeout’ – comes from TLCB favourite David Roberts, who has very much taken the ‘more is more’ route with power, and the ‘it’ll be fine’ route with steering. Kinda like a Camaro.

To quote the builder “Built for speed, it was equipped with two massive engines from Whatt & Pritney. Much of the underside of its nose was given to heat exchanger pipes. This cooling array boosted the power of the engines considerably. If the designers had paid as much attention to the steering it might have been a successful racer.”

Lego Wipeout Racer

A picture says a thousand words, but this image says just one, and that word is ‘Fwooooosh!’. In fact we don’t think any picture has ever said the word ‘Fwooooosh!’ better than this one. It comes from Nick Trotta of Flickr, who has created this brilliant Wipeout-esque space racer in glorious fwooooshishness. There’s much more to see at via the Flickr album by clicking here.

Lego Wipeout

If ever there’s a video game crying out for a remake, this is it. Wipeout anti-gravity racing launched in the mid-’90s on Playstation, PC and Sega Saturn, and it was epic. Set in 2052, players competed in the F3600 anti-gravity league, piloting racers around a variety of ludicrous tracks to a soundtrack by legendary artists Leftfield, Chemical Brothers, Orbital and others.

Taking us right back to 1996 is Volker Brodkorb, with two gorgeous anti-gravity racers inspired by the game. Each is built brilliantly and includes a mini-figure pilot and some wonderful custom decal work to boot.
