LEGO Technic 42129 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck | Set Preview

Things are about to get very big. And very expensive.

This is the brand new LEGO Technic 42129 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck, it measures a hefty half a metre long, and it’s due to carry an equally huge price-tag when it goes on sale later this year ($300/£275).

However that enormous sum of money unlocks the most powerful motorised truck that LEGO have ever built, with three Large motors, one Medium motor, and bluetooth control via the LEGO Control+ App.

Those motors power all four wheels, the steering, and – for the first time ever – remotely locking differentials. All-wheel-suspension, a working gearbox, and a ‘detailed engine’ (which might just be a spinning fan) also feature, which compared to yesterday’s reveal isn’t all that much, but then, 42129 looks mega off-road.

LEGO have made some properly bold claims about climbing angles in their press release, and included in the set are some marker flags so that owners can test these via setting their own off-road courses at home.

A smorgasbord of amusingly generic racing stickers are included too (‘Oil’, ‘Intake’, ‘Rack’, and – our personal favourite – ‘Axle Beam’), although these actually look OK, and 42129 is blessed with the same enhanced level of detail as other recent Technic sets.

Aimed at ages 12+, the 2,110 piece LEGO Technic 42129 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck looks like an excellent (if monumentally expensive) addition to the Technic line-up, and perhaps the most fun way to use the Control+ App yet…

Lego Technic Mercedes-Benz Zetros

This is the Mercedes-Benz Zetros, the brand’s ultra-heavy duty off-road truck. Normally found in use by the military, utilities companies, or carrying weighty things to the middle-of-nowhere, it’s a truck that has a sort-of-adventurous life performing fairly mundane jobs. Not this one though.

Built by Samolot of Eurobricks this Zetros pays homage to a one-off expedition adventure vehicle created a few years ago which looks like something from The Wild Thornberrys and is possibly the coolest way ever to cross a continent.

Based on the chassis found within the official LEGO Technic 8110 Mercedes-Benz Unimog set, Samolot’s Zetros forgoes the now-commonplace remote control drive and steering for a host of mechanical and powered functions.

A single Medium Motor and gearbox drive three powered features; the winch, lowering rear tail-lift platform, and the side ladder, plus there’s a piston engine up front, working all-wheel-drive and all-wheel-suspension (as per the Unimog set) and a very nice-looking cab interior.

Lego Technic Mercedes-Benz Zetros Truck RC

This stunning looking Mercedes-Benz Zetros 6×6 crane truck is the work of newcomer JRX, and it’s might just be the most technology and feature packed model of the year so far.

Underneath the realistic exterior are fourteen Power Functions motors, fifteen pneumatic cylinders and ten pairs of LED lights. Oh, and a third-party BuWizz brick to provide the power required and control the working functions. Now concentrate, here comes the science part…

Lego Technic Mercedes Zetros 6x6

All six wheels of JRX’s Zetros are independently suspended and powered by four LEGO Buggy Motors, with the three differential locks activated by a Servo motor and four pneumatic cylinders. These pneumatics are powered by an on-board compressor consisting of a Large motor and four pneumatic pumps, which also drive the crane extension and boom lift via a further five pneumatic cylinders.

A Medium motor and a further three Servo motors power the crane winch, rotation and elevation, whilst another Servo, Medium motor and two more pneumatic cylinders drive the outriggers. One final Medium motor powers the front winch and ten pairs of LEDs light the headlights, tail-lights, floodlights, warning lights and flashing turn signals.

JRX’s Mercedes-Benz Zetros has more squeezed inside it than your Mom’s corset, and just like your Mom there’s a video of it action available to view online.
