Lego Rat Rod Hot Rod

The world is full of wonderful forgotten cars. From middle eastern ‘princes’ abandoning their supercars in desert parking lots to the little old lady whose late husband’s classic Jaguar has been decomposing silently in her unopened garage for decades, all petrolheads dream of discovering a long-lost automotive relic.

Kosmas Santosa has recreated that moment when the door onto something special is opened with this beautifully shot garage scene, and you can see more of his ‘Abandoned Beauty’ on Flickr here.

Unlike last night’s Oscars (props to Leonardo DiCaprio for his climate change winners speech), this lovely little rat rod by TLCB favourite _Tiler includes every colour, and just look at how excellent it is as a result! Something of a metaphor for cohesive society…

Lego Hot Rod Hearse

No, not that Black Friday. Our Elves are feeling quite sinister today (which means they might be plotting something), and thus we have a few dark and moody creations to share.

First up is TLCB regular piratecox‘s superb hot rod hearse, giving mini-figures the chance to go out in style. It looks the perfect funeral vehicle for a chap like the one below, who mixes driving his brutal-looking rat rod pick-up with piloting a jet-black Corsair fighter plane. Sydag is the builder and you can see more of his stunning build on Flickr at the link above, whilst we try to work out what the Elves are up to…

Lego Hot Rods

All of these brilliant Town-scale hot rods were discovered by one TLCB Elf, an Elf who is by far the luckiest in TLCB history, and who is soon likely to be the fattest in TLCB history too.

They all come from Flick’s Tim Henderson, who has designed a neat modular chassis to which a variety of body-styles and engines can be quickly and easily attached.

To demonstrate his systems’ flexibility Tim has built nine hot and rat rods using the same common architecture, and every single one looks thoroughly excellent. If there was any idea ideally suited to, er… LEGO Ideas, this is surely it.

Tim’s platform can be constructed in a variety of lengths to suit different applications, and it can fit both a traditional mini-figure and a Friends figurine behind the wheel.

Lego Volksrod Diesel

The diesel car market is a curious thing. It’s been around for ages, was relentlessly mocked by Top Gear and their like until a decade ago, yet now in Europe over half of all cars sold are fuelled from the black pump (and almost every luxury car, SUV or rep-mobile saloon is diesel powered). Even Top Gear now approves.

Currently though, diesel is rapidly falling out of favour for being nowhere near as clean in the real world as the official EU tests suggest, and it’s petrol-hybrid that is seen as the immediate solution to our urban air quality problems. But as hybrid technology is relatively new it’s being relentlessly mocked by Top Gear and their like… Hmm, where have we seen this before?

Anyway, because America is automotively about a decade behind Europe car manufacturers are now shifting their diesel wares stateside – probably in anticipation of the bottom falling out of the EU market at anytime soon. This new wave of diesels is being largely marketed as ‘Clean Diesel’ (because that way no-one will ask any searching questions), and Lino Martins has put this magic new fuel to good use in his wonderful diesel-powered Volksrod rat rod. It looks clean to us!

We deliberated quite a lot about whether to give this post the same title that Flickr’s _Tiler has used for this creation. Not because we’re a clean bunch here at TLCB (as the regular notes about your Mom testify), but more because whenever we title a post… er, ‘ambiguously’, we get inundated with spam.

Anyway, we’re risking it. And if you’re too young to know what this title means, ask your Mom…

Group of the Month – Head Turnerz

It’s time for another trip into the online Lego community, as we resurrect the oft-forgotten ‘Group of the Month’ segment here at TLCB!

Much of the online Lego community is centred on Flickr; it’s a happy hunting ground for our Elves and is free from the ratings madness that blights MOCpages. Head Turnerz – one of Flickr’s most prolific vehicular groups – was founded there last year by a few ex-MOCpages users, and it’s rapidly grown to accommodate almost 100 members. We asked one of their admins to describe what the group is all about; “Head Turnerz is the group for LEGO car enthusiasts of all kinds, from stock standard to heavily modified and everything in between, Head Turnerz has it all!”

We’ve featured a number of creations from the Head Turnerz group here at TLCB, and both of today’s finds hail from one of the group’s monthly ‘meets’. Their February meet is all about hot rods & customs, from ’32 Ford Hi-boys all the way to slammed ’49 Mercurys, as demonstrated by Thomas Graafland‘s stunning rat rod above and Aaden H‘s slick ’30 Ford Model-A below.

Monster Miata

Lego Monster Miata

We like Mazda’s little MX-5 Miata here at TLCB Towers. We also like hot rods, so throw the two together and we, er… well actually to be honest we’re not really sure if we like the idea of a Frankenmiata or not. But whilst the concept leaves us confused, we are sure that in this LEGO form at least, a V8 powered Miata hot rod is a damn cool ride.
