Light It Up

It’s the early-’80s, and computers have the power of a Casio wristwatch. But that didn’t stop programmer Kevin Flynn from being sucked inside one and having to fight his way out. Kinda like trying to leave Facebook today.

The 1982 movie ‘TRON’ was groundbreaking in both its exploration of the virtual world and its use of computer generated imagery (CGI), which handily fitted the visuals required by the storyline perfectly. And it featured some wicked-cool motorbikes.

This is the aforementioned virtual vehicle, the TRON ‘Light Cycle’, brought to physical reality by TLCB Master MOCer Sariel, lit via beautiful LED strip lighting and rotary beacons from Brickstuff, and powered and controlled by a BuWizz 2.0 bluetooth brick.

A LEGO RC Buggy Motor drives the bike’s (amazing) rear wheel whilst a Power Functions Servo steers, and you can watch this incredible creation in action via the video below. A full gallery of stunning imagery is available at Sariel’s ‘TRON Bike’ Flickr album, and you can discover how he creates jaw-dropping models like this via the link to his interview here at TLCB in the text above.

The Last Day of Lock-Down

It’s the final day of TLCB’s Lock-Down B-Model Competition, where you can win an amazing SBrick Plus Pro Pack! An array of B-Model machinery has been posted in the last hours (and there are still a few to go should you wish to enter your own alternate build), the best of which we’ll be sharing today. Before the big guns we’re kicking-off with two of the smaller entries; previous entrant Davide Bersia‘s 10242 Mini Cooper-based racing car and newcomer truckman aka T M‘s Tron-based truck. There’s more to see of each alternate via the links above, and we’ll be back shortly with a lot more…

Street Punk

The future can seem a bleak and daunting place, where Miami is under an ocean that contains more plastic than fish, and where the Amazon is just a smouldering ash heap. Lego builders are often far more optimistic than this TLCB writer though, either predicting a Mad Max style post-apocalyptic party of thunderous V8 hot rods and pointy metal hats, or a colourful electrical megacity filled with glowing excitement. It’s the latter we have for you today, courtesy of TLCB debutant Lego-nuts and his superb cyberpunk street scene. A pair of Tron-style motorcycles provide the vehicular link, ready to race through a perfect midnight city backdrop. Head to the streets of the future via the link above and join the race.

Lego Tron Light Cycle Sariel

1982’s computer-themed adventure Tron might be something of a cult film now, but its initial release was such a failure that it stopped makers Disney from releasing another live action movie for a decade. We suspect Lego-building legend Sariel will have no such trouble with the release of his latest build; easily the coolest thing from the movie, the Tron Light Cycle.

One of our Elves was absolutely on it today, and thus we’ve got hold of this so early that we have no idea what it does (there’s not even a description from the builder at the time of posting this). However, if his previous works are anything to go by then Sariel’s newest creation will be packed with functionality as well as looking damn cool.

You can see all of the images at Sariel’s Flickr photostream, where we expect full build details will be released shortly.

Sci-Friday

Lego Tron Light Cycle

What with it being the first day of the New Year, The Lego Car Blog Elves think they are now living in the future. Because they’re idiots. It’ll wear off soon, but until then they’ve gone all sci-fi.

As such, here’s a slick Tron Light Cycle from Flickr’s MortalSwordsman, complete with a rather alluring rider, and a brilliant Classic Space lunar exploration vehicle from Flickr’s Alec Hole. You can see more of each via the links above.

Tron Tuesday

Lego TRON Light CycleIt’s a Tuesday, and we have a Tron MOC. The title practically wrote itself! Peter Mowry‘s awesome second generation Light Cycle is a work of Lego art. Based on the vehicles from the movie about a video game-turned-reality (and featuring on the sound-track the only good noise ever to come out of France – Daft Punk) you can see more of this brilliant creation on Peter’s photostream at the link above. The Game has changed.

This is just a game…

...The game's changed

Normally the Elves only like Christmas films, or films they shouldn’t be watching (see the Taxi Driver post from last week). But there’s something about the bright lights of Tron that holds them captivated like a 3 year old watching Rasta Mouse (Google it). Peter Mowry demonstrates both his epic building and photo-shopping skills with his incredible Tron Light Cycle, complete with Grid and the weird light thingy that shoots from the back. MOCpages has the details.
