Most LEGO pieces can be used in almost infinite ways. It’s the very purpose of LEGO. However there are a few parts that seem to be defiantly single-use. The Primo ride-on elephant. Anything from the awful Galidor range. And the wearable Bionicle mask.

Designed so that kids could pretend to be defending Mata-Nui or something, the mid-00’s were clearly a difficult time for LEGO. And yet out of adversity comes triumph, in the form of Scott Wilhelm‘s magnificent ‘Mobile Reactor Transport’.

Wearing the life-size Toa face like a tortoise wears its shell, the until-now-pointless-part looks purpose-made for Scott’s half-track rover. Delightful greebling is visible through the mask’s orifices and there’s more to see of the build, including the epically inventive parts usage, at Scott’s photostream.

According to The Lego Car Blog’s Submission Guidelines, the Elves prefer models to have, “Clean, contrasting backgrounds…”. We had to make an exception in the case of Petris Sprogris’ “Project_BLACK” vehicle. The rusting metal panel, which looks very like the top of the TLCB beer fridge, does actually contrast nicely with this all black build. Adding a spray of water, some carefully chosen lighting and a good macro focus has given Petris some winning photos. The Elves also liked the reversed tires, angled windscreen and blend of System and other parts. Click this link to MOCpages or this link to Flickr to see more.

2015 Sets Preview! Sort of…

New Lego 2015

It’s that time of year again when a crack team of The Lego Car Blog Elves is catapulted over the wall of The LEGO Group HQ in the hope of scooping next years’ LEGO line-up. Not all return (we’re pretty sure the guard dogs have learned it’s a tasty time of year), but for those that do fame and glory* await! We’re lucky enough to have sent a (mostly) successful Elf Team this year, and the photos they’ve returned with make for interesting viewing.

Unfortunately all of the images are under embargo at the moment, so it would be wrong of us to publish them just yet, but to whet your appetite here are some early details that we can share of what will be coming to stores in 2015;

Technic: Several small to medium sized Technic sets, some with wheels, some with tracks, and a few with pull-back motors. And a motorbike.

City: Construction equipment galore, a few things swampy and the usual array of emergency services. And a Unimog.

Pirates: Yaarr! They’re back!

Bionicle: (Sigh)

New Lego Bionicle 2015

The LEGO Group is bringing Bionicle back for 2015! And here at The Lego Car Blog we could not be less enthusiastic about this fact. It’s safe to say we care as much about Bionicle MOCs as we do about Kim Kardashian’s Twitter feed. In other words, not at all. So here’s a classic Citroen instead!

Built by Flickr’s Massimo B it’s a late 1950s’ DS, complete with opening doors, bench seats and the famous single spoke steering wheel. You can see more of the French classic via the link above, where there is definitely no Bionicle.

This one freaked us out a bit today. The first – and probably last – Bionicle creation to be blogged here is this colourful ATV by TLCB newcomer Dave Foreman, and it bears an uncanny resemblance to the Elf that found it. Very unnerving…

Eerie Airship

If airships could look evil…

This sinister looking contraption, an airship from the mind of Si MOCs on MOCpages, actually fulfils a noble purpose; re-gassing the Earth’s depleted ozone layer (according to the notes by the builder). Mixing Bionicle, Technic and Town pieces to great effect, Si MOCs’ ‘T-Blimp’* is an entry into the popular annual MOCathalon competition running on MOCpages.
