Lego Transformers G1

The ’80s theme continues here at The Lego Car Blog, and today it’s our own workforce of horrible little Elves that are the delighted beneficiaries.

Such is their well-documented love for all things Transformers-related that we were forced to instate a ‘No Transformers until you find a MOC’ policy, often reinforced by the use of the office air-horn.

Mr. Air-Horn is slumbering silently today though, because the Elves are downstairs happily watching the original 1980s Transformers ‘G1’ cartoon series. This rare demonstration of staff generosity is reward for today’s find; two superb G1 Transformers Nissan 300ZXs created by Alex Wong of MOCpages.

‘Smokescreen’ and ‘Bluestreak’ can both fit a mini-figure inside and they feature some of LEGO’s awesome retro printed pieces, but their real party-trick is – naturally – a very slick transformation. You can see how Alex has done it by visiting his MOCpage via the link above, whilst we join the Elves for a bit of cartoon watching…

A Lone Crusader in a Dangerous World

Lego Knight Rider KITT

The world… of the Knight Rider.

Probably both the coolest and cheesiest TV series ever made Knight Rider arrived on our screens in 1982, running for four glorious – although some might say ridiculous – years.

The star of the show was of course the artificially intelligent Pontiac Trans-Am ‘KITT’, a self-aware and nearly indestructible force for good, driven by a crime-fighting David Hasselhoff.

This superb Model Team recreation of the Knight Industries Two Thousand is the work of Flickr’s Alex Jones aka Orion Pax, and he’s published an extensive gallery of top quality photos at his website. Click the link above to visit Alex’s Flickr page where you can be re-routed to the full set of images.

Monster Mash

Lego Munster Coach

What with it being Halloween all the Elves are feeling spoooooky, and are trying to find scary Lego vehicles for us here at TLCB. So far they haven’t found a Lego Ssangyong Rodius, but they have found the next best thing; Herman Munster’s ‘Munster Koach’ by the Lego-ace Mad Physicist (who sounds pretty Halloweeny himself!).

The Munsters remind us of a time when monsters were creepy rather than gross* and – in this case – they were hot rodders too! You can see more of Herman and his ride over on Flickr. Fliiiiicker… (in a spooky ghost voice).

*Language caution advised. But the keyboardist is also worthy of note!

Happy Father’s Day!

Lego Batmobile

A while ago we received a request from a little girl and her father, one that we’re only too happy to fulfil this Father’s Day! Over to them to explain their ambition…

In honour of Father’s Day, we would like to introduce you to the Dynanic Duo, Sam & his daughter Tziona. A lifelong Batman fan, Sam has made sure that Tziona’s education includes plenty of time for superheros, especially her favourite, Robin. Tziona can name all the different characters that have held the Robin mantle and the characters they become, and the pair went to New York Comic-Con 2012 dressed as Batman and Robin in custom costumes. Superdad Sam went above and beyond to fulfil his daughter’s latest request when he constructed a Batmobile that allows Batman and Robin to ride together, something LEGO has yet to produce. The build was modelled after the iconic 1966 Batmobile designed by George Barris, which featured in the television program starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin.

The entire project took about a month to complete. Tracking down the right pieces was the hardest part; digging through hundreds of pounds LEGO and waiting for parts to arrive in the mail took up most of the time. After completion Sam submitted the build to LEGO Ideas (formally Lego Cuusoo.) The 50th Anniversary Batmobile has been consistently in the Ideas Top Ten and has over 3,000 supporters to date; once it reaches 10K LEGO will consider producing the model as an official set!

Help us make this Father’s Day special for this Dynamic Duo and vote for the 1966 50th Anniversary LEGO Batmobile here!

Daytona Beach

Lego Miami Vice Ferrari Daytona

Stephen Sander makes his second appearance here at TLCB by making an already cool creation even cooler; outdoor pictures for the win! See more of his Miami Vice Ferrari Daytona on MOCpages here.

Sunday Prime Time

Lego Optimus Prime

The Elves still haven’t got bored of Transformers, and thus they’re still fanatically excited whenever one of their number finds something like this. Today’s comes from alanyuppie on Flickr, and it’s Optimus Prime in ‘Powermaster’ configuration (Optimus is combined with another robot to increase his power and, we suspect, sell more toys).

Alanyuppie’s Lego version really transforms, and with such agility we can’t figure out how it’s done. See if you can work it out at the link above.

Black Friday: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Lego Winnebago

Today a plague of mindless, soulless zombies took to the streets, crushing the weak and inattentive beneath them, and remorselessly stopping at nothing until their lust was quenched.

We are of course talking about the American scourge known as ‘Black Friday’, where people are willing to trample one another to death to secure a 50% discount on something they didn’t even want until today, and where the equivalent of the entire GDP of Sudan is spent in just 24 hours.

Much like The Walking Dead’s Dale sitting atop his Winnebago whilst the zombies surge below him, The Lego Car Blog Towers are located out of reach of the madness, allowing us to watch from afar as society destroys itself to secure $25 off a hi-fi.

Misterzumbi’s mini-figure scale recreation of both Dale and the motorhome that featured in the first two seasons of the apocalyptic series seem perfect for today. We just hope our future is brighter than Dale’s turned out to be.

You can see all the photos of Misterzumbi’s fantastic model at his photostream here, and for our readers that managed to avoid the Black Friday greed, a super secret link. If you’d like to do something different from the zombies today, we highly recommend Red Cross, Christian Aid, Unicef and many more.

The Fall Guy

Lego The Fall Guy

Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist) continues his run of TV-themed builds with the GMC K-2500 pick-up truck from the 1980s American series ‘The Fall Guy’.

Shown a few thousand miles away from TLCB Towers (and before this writer was born), our extensive research into the cult TV show has revealed it ran for 5 years between 1981 to 1986, and was set around a stunt-man-come-bounty-hunter and Heather Thomas’ chest. That’s about as far as we got.

Type ‘Heather Thomas’ into your search engine to do your own research, or alternatively click the link above to see more of Ralph’s Lego version of the iconic truck.

Slug Balancer*

Lego Magnum PI Ralph Savelsberg Ferrari

Ralph Savelsberg adds another star TV car to his collection. The Ferrari 308 was one of the most famous cars of the 1980s, thanks mostly to an extravagantly moustached Tom Selleck – playing simultaneously the most masculine and the most camp TV character of all time – in the hit American TV show ‘Magnum P.I’. You can see the full gallery on Flickr at the link.

*A large prize** to those of you who get the cross-televisual title reference!

**Not really.

Yet Another One

Lego General Lee

Not just another version of General Lee, but also another epic vehicle by Clayton Marchetti.

A recent visit to Clayton’s page showed us a series of famous movie vehicles, and not only the vehicles are spectacularly good, the scenery and storylines are really well worked out too. Give Clayton a visit by clicking on the link above.

On Tonight’s Top Gear…

Lego Top Gear, Clarkson, Hammond, May, Stig…Richard, James and I undergo some plastic surgery, and the Stig races a car that you can build yourself!

Ralph Savelsberg aka Mad Physicist immortalises the Top Gear team in Lego.

No Income Tax, No VAT…

Lego Only Fools and HorsesBritish readers of The Lego Car Blog will already be singing the next line. ‘Only Fools and Horses’ was a long running British sit-com set in Peckham, London, between 1981 and 1991, in which two dodgy dealers tried to earn a living outside normal retail boundaries. Easily one of the greatest comedies ever made ‘Only Fools and Horses’ featured hundreds of classic moments and one pretty ropey van.

Optimistically named the ‘supervan’, Reliant’s commercial Regal in various shades of yellow became one of the most famous vehicles on television. Rumour has it that boxer Ricky Hatton owns the real Reliant now, so if you want it you’ll have to build one yourself. Which is what TLCB regular and Brothers Brick writer Ralph Savelsberg did. See more on Flickr.

Acceptable in the ’80s

Lego Movie CarsThis is about as much epic as we can fit in one post here at The Lego Car Blog! Stephan Sander on MOCpages has recreated the coolest cars from the coolest shows of the 1980s, and every one is as good as anything we’ve blogged here to date. Built in LEGO’s own ‘Miniland’ style each vehicle even includes the lead characters from the relevant TV show. See if you can identify them all! Oh, and check out Stephan’s website here – where there’s even more ’80s automotive goodness available.
