Crossover Clown

Lego Mantra Rancho

Despite being more expensive yet not as good as the hatchback or saloon on which they’re based, demand for crossover vehicles is booming. Several cars claim to be the originator of this pointless trend, including Toyota’s RAV4 and Nissan’s Qashqai, and a few more were derided at the time of their launch and failed miserably – yet if they were sold in today’s market they would probably do rather well, such as Rover’s Streetwise and Pontiac’s Aztek – however it was actually a forgotten little French company that came up with the idea of a normal car with off-road looks first.

Matra’s Rancho was based on the little Simca 1100, but with the addition of fibreglass rear bodywork and faux-4×4 styling, and was built from the mid ’70s to the mid ’80s. In a curious twist of fate Matra then invented another new class of car as the Rancho’s replacement, the world’s first MPV; the Renault Espace.

It was the Espace that gained immediate popularity and spawned a whole new market, with every major motor manufacturer copying the formula by the mid ’90s. However, by the 2010s demand for MPVs was plummeting, to be replaced by – you’ve guessed it – the crossover, the car which the MPV had replaced three decades earlier. Weird.

This colourful Lego version of the late ’70s Matra Rancho comes from TLCB favourite Ralph Savelsberg aka Mad Physicist, and it’s apparently the star of a Dutch TV show called ‘Bassie & Adriaan’. You can see more of Ralph’s Rancho, as well as the neat caravan in tow, at his photostream – click the link above to see more.

Matt LeBlanc Hosting Top Gear?…

Lego Top Gear

Occasionally we dip into the news here at TLCB, and today is one such day. Speculation has been rife as to who will join Chris Evans for the re-launched BBC Top Gear later this year, from models to motorbike racers the press seem to have a new ‘confirmed’ co-host every other week.

Well now it’s our turn. It’s Matt Le Blanc. Yes the actor from Episodes, Joey from Friends, and the fastest Star In a Reasonably Priced Car is set to join the show as co-host this year. You heard it here first!* If we’re right (we’ve even beaten the BBC themselves to this…) you can expect to read this story in the major news outlets very soon.

You can read our other posts relating to the Top Gear story, which include the wonderful caricatures of past hosts Jeremy, Richard and James by Ralph Savelsberg above, by clicking here.

Brick-Bean

Lego Mr. Bean Mini

LEGO’s 10242 Mini Cooper set received an excellent review here at TLCB earlier in the year, but Flickr’s Dornbi decided that his copy could benefit from a few, er… ‘household’ modifications… modifications that Mr. Bean was forced to put into practice back in 1994 following an eventful trip to the January sales.

You can see more of Dornbi’s brilliant modified 10242 set on Flickr at the link above, and the unique approach to automotive packaging by Mr. Bean on which this model is based by clicking here.

CHiPs

Lego Kawasaki Police Motorcycle

TLCB favourite Ralph Savelsberg is back with another superb TV show build, although this time it’s one that no-one in TLCB Towers has heard of.

CHiPs was apparently an American 1970s-1980s cop drama, featuring California Highway Patrol’s finest law enforcers, some lovely Kawasaki 1000 motorbikes, and lots of ridiculous freeway pile-ups. We think the Elves would probably love it.

There’s more to see of Ralph’s latest build on Flickr – click this link to hit the on-ramp.

Bricking Bad

Lego Breaking Bad Pontiac Aztek

Breaking Bad is, according to everyone who’s ever watched it (including this TLCB writer), the best thing that’s ever been on TV ever. The Pontiac Aztek however, is widely considered to be one of the worst vehicles ever made in the history of the automobile ever.

These two hyperboles met when some brilliant automotive casting matched the early 2000s crossover with Breaking Bad’s lead character Walter White, aka Heisenberg (before the show’s success attracted some blatant vehicle product placement).

Whist we thoroughly agree with the first statement above, the second we’re not so sure about. The Aztek was of course a spectacular failure, derided for both its function and aesthetics. But… much of what made the Aztek such a joke back in 2001 is now completely on trend. Spilt headlights, cross-over profile, and coupe-like rear glass are now all common-place in the burgeoning crossover segment, with everyone from Nissan to Mercedes using one or more elements of the Aztek’s design in their latest products.

It’s all too late for Pontiac though, which was closed down by parent company GM shortly after the Aztek ceased production. However, in a strikingly similar repeat of another star-car failure, the Aztek has seen a resurgence in popularity as a used buy, mostly due its starring TV role. It may even become a future classic.

The perfect recreation of Walter White’s battered Pontiac Aztek shown here is the work of serial bloggee Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist), and you can see all the photos of his latest TV car at his photostream via the link above.

Lego Jelcz / Mielec / WZT WR-0043 (1971)

This is one of the more unusual vehicles to appear here at TLCB this year, but it’s one of our absolute favourites!

This gorgeous 1971 Jelcz Mielec television truck has been constructed by TLCB regular Karwik.  At 9 studs wide it’s one of the largest mini-figure scale vehicles we’ve featured here, and it’s also one of the most intricate.

Lego TV Truck Jelcz / Mielec / WZT WR-0043

Every detail of the real truck – which you can find online by searching for ‘Jelcz Mielec’ – has been captured beautifully (unlike a 1970s Polish TV camera) and the build has been completed with the addition of some brilliant custom decals and professionally chromed pieces by Chrome Block City.

We highly recommend viewing Karwik’s excellent gallery on Flickr – click the link above to switch channels.

Smokey and the Bandit

Lego Kenworth 900-A Snowman

This gorgeous Model Team recreation of the famous 1975 Kenworth 900-A from the cult classic ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ has been built by the recently returned Chris Melby. Chris is working on the trailer too, so expect more in the coming weeks. There’s more to see of the superb tractor unit at Chris’ photostream on Flickr – click the link above to get Eastbound and Down.

Robots in Disguise

Lego Optimus Prime Transformer

The Elves are beyond excited today. This incredible recreation of Transformers’ Optimus Prime is the work of TLCB regular, TLCB Master MOCer and Brothers Bricker Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist). As is always the case with Ralph’s creations, the detailing in his latest build is extraordinary, but what’s scarcely believable is that this incredibly life-like truck can really transform. Because Ralph is a wizard.

Much witchcraft and magic later and Ralph’s Optimus Prime truck looks a little different, to the delight of our Elvish workforce. You can see more of Optimus in both his brilliant forms, plus a few images showing a little of how the amazing transformation takes place, at Ralph’s Flickr photostream. Thunderbirds Are Go!

Lego Thunderbird 2

After featuring his incredible Thunderbird 3 model here last week, Flickr’s Gary Davis has uploaded images of one his earlier works, an enormous reconstruction of everyone’s favourite Thunderbird; No.2.

Built using only the simplest of bricks Gary’s stunning replica includes the hangar, mini-figure scale cockpit, support legs, and even an accurate model of the Mole vehicle that Thunderbird 2 carried.

All of the images can be found at Gary’s Flickr photostream; click this link to make a visit.

John’s Out Of Bog Roll Again…

Lego Thunderbirds

Sigh. ‘Alright’, groans an exasperated Alan, ‘I’ll take him another pack.’ ‘But tell him to go easy on the freeze-dried curry this time’ he adds.

The most pointless of the Tracy brothers, orbiting the Earth in Thunderbird 5, is about to get some more cushiony softness courtesy of his long suffering sibling, and Thunderbird 3 pilot, Alan.

This humongous Lego recreation of the Tracy family’s spaceship was discovered on Flickr. It’s the work of Gary Davis who is clearly rather stunningly talented with a Lego brick. You can see more of his incredible model at his photostream – click the link above to launch.

Jeremy Clarks-gone

Lego Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson

The news today that the BBC have taken the decision not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract, and that Top Gear – at least as we know it – is no more, has meant that our Elvish workforce are currently inconsolably sad.

Whilst extreme violence towards colleagues is an almost hourly occurrence here at TLCB Towers, this particular blogger thinks there really could only be one outcome to Jeremy’s moronic outburst. Much as we love the show, it’s probably time to move on – Top Gear existed long before Clarkson, Hammond and May, and it’ll hopefully exist long after them too.

But sadly the news of Jeremy’s axing from the BBC does mean that our Elves are likely to be incredibly mopey for a bit, and that we’re going to be a little more reliant upon you – our readers – for good blog-worthy content.

If you’d like to suggest a creation that should feature here at The Lego Car Blog you can do so by commenting on the Feedback and Submission Suggestions page, or if you have a Flickr account by sending us a Flickr Mail. If you’re feeling especially productive you may even get to write a post yourself – just let us know in your comment that you’d like to give guest blogging a go and we’ll arrange for you to be able to submit your content.

In the meantime you can join our Elves in mourning by clicking here and here to read our Top Gear related posts from times past, including the great recreation of Jeremy, Richard, James and the Stig by Flickr’s Ralph Savelsberg shown above.

Bricking Breaking Bad

Lego Breaking Bad Meth Lab RV

Possibly the greatest TV show of recent times is back (sort of) with the arrival of the new spin-off ‘Better Call Saul’. Here at TLCB though, we’re all about the original – and what better way to remind ourselves of the five seasons of brilliance than with two of Breaking Bad’s most infamous vehicles; Walter White’s Fleetwood RV meth lab, and his hideous (and perfectly cast) Pontiac Aztec.

Both of the Miniland-scale Lego recreations in this post have been built by Stephan Sander, and they can be viewed in more detail on either MOCpages or Flickr.

Airwolf

Lego Airwolf

A sort of Knight Rider of the skies, Airwolf aired between 1984 and 1987, and made every 6 year old boy want to be a helicopter pilot when they grew up. This near-perfect Lego recreation of the ’80s TV star is the work of TLCB regular Ralph Savelsberg, adding to his already impressive catalogue of famous TV vehicles. You can see all the images via the link above.

On Tonight’s Show…

Series 22 of the world’s favourite television show is nearly here, and this time they’ve picked up a few (virtual) bricks…

Fireman Sam

Lego Dennis Fire Engine

When he hears the fire bell chime,
Fireman Sam is there on time.
Putting on his coat and hat
In less than seven seconds flat
He’s always on the scene, Fireman Sam!
And his engine’s bright and clean, Fireman Sam!
You cannot ignore, Sam is the hero next door!

This beautiful 1980s Dennis fire engine comes from Flickr’s Ricecracker, and he’s used more brilliant building techniques in one model than we’ll sometimes see in a whole week of blogging. Click the link above to see more.
