Well travelled, a bit worn out, but still able to take a bit of a pounding*, Bruce Willis’ hover taxi in The Fifth Element wasn’t in quite as good nick at the end of the movie’s chase scene as it was at the beginning. NYPD’s finest were the cause of the damage, with their own hover patrol cars equipped with slightly more weaponry than today’s Ford Crown Vics. Their reckless approach to using it hasn’t changed much though…
This excellent recreation of one of the NYPD patrol cars from The Fifth Element comes from Flickr’s Davdup, whose hover taxi appeared here earlier in the year. Like his previous build brilliant detailing and clever techniques are present throughout, with the model further enhanced by custom decals. Head to Davdup’s Flickr album to give chase.

It might seem like time is repeating itself, such is the regularity of Back to the Future DeLorean time machine builds appearing here, but there’s always time for one more. Especially if it looks as utterly brilliant as this one…
This incredible replica of the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine from ‘Back to the Future Part II’ is the work of Dave Slater of Flickr, and the attention to detail contained within it is astonishing.
Every pipe, tube, light and flux capacitor element has been expertly recreated from LEGO pieces (plus a few third-party lights that look spectacular), whilst the DMC-12’s gull-wing doors (standard from the DeLorean factory) and its folding wheels for flight mode (something of an optional extra) are present and work beautifully.
Dave’s DeLorean is very possibly the finest example of the infamous movie car yet and there’s a whole lot more to see of his magnificent build at his Flickr album. Click the link above to go where you don’t need roads.

This hovering Checker taxi was found by one of our Elves today, who – after watching two compatriots munching on yellow Smarties (they’re the best kind) yesterday – is now happily eating a yellow candy reward. 1997’s ‘The Fifth Element’ had it all; alien opera, robotic turkeys, Milla Jovovich, a malevolent cosmic entity, and – of course – flying yellow cabs. This is Bruce Willis’ hover taxi and it comes from Davdup of Flickr who has done a superb job of recreating it in Model Team form. There may not be a super-hot-saviour-of-the-universe in the back seat, but it’s got everything else. Click the link above to hail a ride 250 years in the future.
This retro-tastic creation was discovered by one of our Elves on Flickr today, who returned to the office to collect a meal and a Smartie. Built by TLCB favourite billyburg and sharing your Dad’s nickname from his disco days, this ‘Cosmic Cruiser’ blends science fiction hover cars with ’60s land-yacht styling, and adds a Classic Space paint job to glorious effect. We’ve butchered one of the greatest classics of music there, but no matter – because what a neat creation we’ve done it with! Built by TLCB regular de-marco this hover forklift and hover loading bay work a treat, and we hope this combo foretells of more hovery creations to come. The revolution’s here.
The forthcoming sequel to 1982’s classic film Bladerunner has its trailers out now on YouTube. For car builders, there have been a few tantalising glimpses of this film’s interpretation of the “Spinner”. It’s already inspired some Lego builders, including GoIPlaysWithLego, whose clean, sleek Spinner features at the top of this post. Calin has also produced a smooth Spinner and a classic version (below), which is well worth a closer look – click this link to his PhotoStream.
What does all of this mean for the writers of TLCB? Firstly, we’re thinking of replacing our irritating Elven workforce with some obedient Replicants. Secondly, we get to indulge our growing penchant for sci-fi posts with tenuous British pop music links. Thirdly, we’re able continue our quest to try to understand sci-fi: do electric sheep dream of androids?
Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi epic Blade Runner is about to get an update. And it’s an update that looks – in the trailer at least – pretty awesome. Whilst we hesitantly but optimistically await the arrival of ‘Blade Runner 2049’, Flickr’s tfcrafter1 reminds us of one of the reasons why the original movie was so special. We’re not sure that a floating tow-truck is the most suitable vehicle in the event that your hovercar breaks down. An ambulance might be more appropriate. Or a hearse. When robots rise up against their human overlords (it will happen) we’re not expecting a Terminator/Matrix style mass-extermination. Petty crime though – that’s a given, and it’s where the real fun is. These two joyriding robots look like they’re having a good time; sadly we don’t expect that rather pretty stolen hovercar to look as nice later on in their trip though. Galaktek is the builder and you can see more of the robotic due and their stolen prize on Flickr, before they inevitably stuff it into a lamppost.
Yesterday‘s blogged builder has the unusual privilege of featuring here twice in a row, thanks to another gorgeous Town-scale hovercar, this time targeting the well-to-do family man. 2015 is the year Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel forward to in Back to the Future Part II, but we still don’t have a hovercar. We think it’ll be quite some time before we do too.
