Duty Free

On every flight there’s always one. That lady or gentleman who – when booze is marginally cheaper courtesy of airport tax free shopping – decides to optimise this saving. “I’ll just get a few bottles to take home” they say. Sure they will. Those bottles will be empty before they’ve even boarded. Anyway, this post is for them – and to that one guy who tries to smoke in the airplane toilet – as these models are literally encouraging drinking/smoking and flying.

With most countries doing what Formula 1 wouldn’t (because F1 is all about the monies), and banning alcohol and cigarette sponsorship in sport, alcoholic beverage and cigarette companies are no longer seen on the side of Formula 1 cars.

But there are no rules in space…

This is Formula Zero Gravity, an invention by British Lego Group Brickish, and they’re single-handedly bringing morally-dubious sponsorship back to top level racing! Two of motorsport’s greatest liveries have made the return so far (with more to come), with Nick Barrett’s stupendous Martini Racing F0 racer above, and Jeremy Williams’ gorgeous John Player Special F0 racer below.

Full disclosure; we don’t really know the difference between sky-fi and sci-fi. One has propellors and one doesn’t maybe? This lovely Classic Space workshop scene comes from Flickr’s Jon Blackford, depicting our favourite smiling spacemen hard at work doing whatever it is that Classic Spacemen do. This delightfully outrageous concept motorcycle is the work of one Flickr’s most inventive builders, the brilliant F@bz. Inspired by the ‘Ghost in the Shell’ movie, which is a feat in itself as the movie was one of the most uninspired we’ve seen in recent times, it’s called the Yamaha Hidenka, and there’s more to see at F@bz’ photostream via the link above.

Damn those Elves! They know we’re useless at sci-fi. Sigh, OK, here goes…

This is, apparently, a Molniya – I, an EMP Starfighter used by the Russian Space Corps, capable of… er, frankly, we have no idea. But what we do know is that the building techniques used to create it are absolutely terrific. The unique design comes from the mind of Flickr’s Legohaulic and you can see more, as well as read details of what this ship is actually for, at his photostream.

It’s been a while since we let the Elves watch a Transformers movie. This is partly because they’ve not found much in the way of Transformers-related builds, but mostly because after the abomination of ‘Transformers 4 – Age of Extinction’ we just couldn’t stomach any more Michael Bay directed nonsense.

Today though, we’ve relented, because one of their number returned with this cache of superb fully Transformable Autobots courtesy of Alex Jones aka Orion Pax.

Each creation is an ingenious work of art, and you can now build them for yourself, as Alex has released a new book containing step-by-step building instructions! There’s more to see via the link above, where you can also find a link to Amazon where Alex’s book is available to buy.

Seventies Escape

This TLCB writer wasn’t around in the 1970s, but from the remnants that exist today it seems like it was pretty bleak time in ’70s Britain. Everyone was on strike, nothing worked properly, and everything was brown.

Hence British TV series ‘UFO‘, written by Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett creator Gerry Anderson, and set in the near future of 1980, UFO offered some escapism from the drudgery of 1970s Britain. At least for a year, as it only lasted from 1970 to 1971.

UFO featured some pretty cool vehicles though, as is Anderson’s hallmark, and this is one of them; the S.H.A.D.O Interceptor, deployed to protect the secret moonbase from where operations against the alien invasion of 1980 could be orchestrated.

This slick mini-figure recreation of the Interceptor comes from previous bloggee and TLCB Master MOCer Andrea Lattanzio aka Norton74, joining his previously featured UFO Command Centre, and was suggested to us by a reader. Sci-Friday

The Lego Car Blog Elves are clearly in a spacey mood today, as we have no less than three sci-fi creations to share. This gives us a headache because, as regular readers will know, we’re useless with anything science-fictiony. Oh well, here goes…

First up, pictured above, is perig perig‘s ‘The Tiny Whale’, which looks like a boat, an airship and tow truck have been involved in a forceful accident. Still, it is, even to us here at TLCB, a deeply cool build, and you can see more at the link above.

Next up is this mean looking tri-pedal mech from Flickr’s Sunder_59. This TLCB writer’s Better Half has informed him that pastel colours are in, which explains why Sunder’s creation looks so good. There’s more to see at the builder’s photostream – click the link above to take a look.

And finally, something with wheels! We still don’t really know it’s for though, seeing as it’s also a sci-fi build, but if we were a mini-figure we’d love to drive it to the shops. Volker Brodkorb is the builder behind it, it’s called a ‘DooM Inc. Troop Support Vehicle’, and there’s lot more to see on Flickr via the link above.

Despicable Motoring

Ah Despicable Me, everyone’s favourite evil-villain-based computer-animated movie, including ours.

Unfortunately though, the film has been hi-jacked. Hi-jacked by the sort of people that feel the need to post what they’re having for breakfast on social media. Or to let everyone know that they really love their cat. Or – and we really can’t stress enough how awful these people are with this last example – sharing pictures of Despicable Me Minions with sycophantic phrases that have nothing to do with what the Minions in the picture are doing. At all.

‘Share if you love your best friend!’ Picture of a Minion. ‘I’m not fat, I just have airbags because I’m precious.’ Picture of a Minion. ‘Men have PMS too. Piss and Moan Syndrome!’ Picture of a Minion. It’s a cancer on the internet, and it needs to be stopped. And breathe.

Anyway, to offer some counterbalance to all the Minion related gibberish being produced by those with an IQ deficiency, here’s a Despicable Me post that doesn’t feature a picture a Minion. What it does feature is Gru’s rather magnificent rocket car, reproduced brilliantly in Lego form by Flickr’s -derjoe- and photographed by Peter Schmid.

Cartoon Scarlet

What do spaghetti-O parasitic aliens fear most of all? Well according to Gerry Anderson, it’s a pointily-styled hatchback with a tail fin stuck on the roof. All is not what it seems though, as the driver of said hatchback has fortunately acquired the aliens’ powers of regeneration, rendering him ‘virtually indestructible’.

Captain Scarlet fought the Mysterons from Mars between 1967 and 1968, and if we’re honest we have no idea whether he and his Spectrum colleagues succeeded in thwarting the alien threat, so vague was the series’ ending. Still, it was miles better than Stingray…

This cheeky cartoon recreation of Scarlet’s Spectrum Patrol Car comes from serial bloggee Redfern1950s, and is beautifully constructed in his trademark style. There’s more to see at Red’s photostream – click the link above to make the jump to puppet-based sci-fi circa 1967.

The Last Jedi

With the world’s nerds collectively losing their shit over the latest Star Wars movie trailer it was only a matter of time before the new spacecraft found their way into the Lego Community. Beating LEGO themselves to the punch is Grant Davis, who has recreated ‘The Last Jedi’s’ Resistance Skimmer beautifully from just a few seconds of blurry footage, complete with a wonderful brick-built cracked salt-pan upon which to skim it.
