Dihedral Synchro-Helix

You see, it’s not all Your Mom jokes and toilet humour here at The Lego Car Blog, because today we’re doing science. Just look at that title!

The source of our newfound intelligence is this incredible Koenigsegg Agera RS by Eurobricks’ mihao, which includes – amongst much else – fully functional dihedral synchro-helix doors.

Of course our enormous brains know exactly what ‘dihedral synchro-helix’ means, but we’re not going to write it here so as not to alienate our readers.

Besides those brainiac doors, mihao’s phenomenal Technic Supercar includes opening front and rear clamshells, a removable roof, front and rear LED lights, remote control drive, steering, and motorised adjustable independent suspension, plus a V8 engine hooked up to an eight-speed (plus neutral and reverse) paddle-shift sequential gearbox.

It’s a Technic engineering masterclass, and one you can have a go at yourself as mihao has released building instructions for his astonishing model for free (a hundred TLCB Points to mihao).

I Feel the Need…

The sad state of cinema at the moment means that the only films that currently get made are sequels, prequels, re-boots, or all three, as part of some ‘cinematic universe’ bollocks (we’re looking at you Marvel).

Cue next year’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ release, an unnecessary sequel arriving some three decades after the (magnificent) ’80s original. Still, at least it provides the opportunity for a repeat homo-erotic beach volleyball scene to an astoundingly suggestive soundtrack.

More interesting to TLCB than yet another movie reboot is this Maverick; the Can-Am Maverick RS, a wild off-road buggy built to take on the Dakar Rally.

Well, this one hasn’t been built to take on the Dakar Rally, being rather smaller. And constructed from Lego. But it is still more interesting.

Martin Vala is the builder behind it, and he’s recreated the Can-Am Maverick RS in wonderful detail, right down to the steering and suspension, which are brick-built from System pieces.

Green Eyed Monster

Everything is green or eco these days. Even when it’s not. Which is both kinda great, and a bit depressing, as companies seem to only decide to go green when they can market it for extra $$$.

Which makes the lime green Ford Focus RS second generation rather refreshing, as the only thing green about it was the paint. Powered by a Volvo-derived inline-5 turbo producing 300bhp (all of which was sent to the front wheels only – which must’ve been terrifying), the RS could dispatch the 0-60mph dash in under six seconds, with the RS500 version even quicker still.

Fast internal combustion engined cars like the Focus RS are now in their final years, with the latest fast Fords switching to electric propulsion (which is absolutely a good thing. Just don’t believe that EVs are ‘good’ for the environment. We’re back to greenwashing again…), so the second generation Focus RS will either become outlawed and worthless or a certified classic.

We’d bet on the latter though, so if you’re lucky enough to have one hold on to it. For those of us that don’t, here’s SP_LINEUP‘s fantastic Lego version, which features more ingenious building techniques than models five times the size. And it’s exceedingly green.

Lego Technic Ford Focus RS

Ford’s current 345bhp all-wheel-drive Focus RS has gained worldwide recognition for being, well… mental. Now sold in the U.S, Ford are showing their traditional customer base that you don’t need five litres and eight cylinders to make a performance car.

However the RS has actually existed in all three generations of Focus, with the previous version being fitted with a glorious five-cylinder turbo engine from Volvo, then under Ford’s ownership, making 300bhp.

If that wasn’t enough power you could get your hands on one of just five-hundred RS500 versions, which upped boost to unleash a monstrous 345bhp (the same as the current car), but with all of that going through only the front wheels. Wet roundabouts must have been fun…

This spectacular Technic replica of Ford’s second generation Focus RS500 comes from previous bloggee Dugald Cameron and it’s absolutely packed with working functions. A five-cylinder inline engine sits under the hood linked to a six-speed gearbox, all wheels are independently suspended, and the car can be steered both by the steering wheel, which is also adjustable, and via a ‘Hand-of-God’ mechanism. A pneumatic e-brake is also fitted, the seats are fully adjustable, and the doors, hood and hatchback all open.

Lego Technic 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Review

IT’S HERE! LEGO Technic’s incredible 1:8 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, scooped here earlier in the year, has been officially unveiled!

Officially licensed by Porsche, 42056 is one of the largest and most complex sets ever released by the Technic line, featuring over 2,700 pieces and aimed at ages 16+.

Unlike the first spy-shots of this set, the final production version drops its camouflage paint-work as we expected and now wears a gloriously bright orange hue. 42056 also debuts several new pieces not seen before, rides on unique replica Porsche wheels and wears authentic Porsche decals throughout.

The building process has been designed to mirror the way the real car is manufactured, which is an interesting variation from the usual Technic construction process, and each model contains a collectors’ book and an individual serial number, which means we fully expect many of these sets will sit forever unopened in the hands of speculators (boo).

That’s a shame, because 42056 contains some fabulous engineering which has raised the bar in terms of what can be expected from an official LEGO product.

Alongside the usual working steering, suspension and piston engine there is a functioning double-clutch gearbox complete with steering-wheel mounted paddles, just like the PDK transmission used on the real car – something our in-house engineers cautiously hoped for when they dissected the very first teaser image of this set back in January. With four speeds operable from the steering wheel we’re expecting some rubberised or elasticated witchcraft from LEGO’s design department, and it could be the most inventive function added to an official LEGO set in decades.

Opening doors, engine lid, glovebox and trunk all feature, as does Porsche branded luggage and a fully detailed interior with racing seats.

Available from June this year, we’re already saving up to get our hands on 42056 (unless anyone at LEGO is willing to give us a copy!), and we anticipate an RRP of around $300/£250.
