Lego Mercedes-Benz AMG GT3

We’re back! After a few days eating chocolate eggs and drinking beer TLCB Team are back in the office. The Elves, left to their own devices for a few days, are pretty hungry, and we have a back-log of vehicles to publish.

We’ll start with this, a rare small-scale post because… well, we knew what it was from the moment we saw it, which is no mean feat at this scale.

This superbly recreated Mercedes-Benz AMG GT3, complete with a monster high downforce aero kit, is the work of previous bloggee RGB900, and alongside this racing Mercedes he’s built several other well-known supercars in Speed Champions style. You can see more of them and the AMG at his photostream via the link above.

LEGO Technic 42056 – Porsche 911 GT3 RS Set Preview

Lego Technic 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Review

IT’S HERE! LEGO Technic’s incredible 1:8 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, scooped here earlier in the year, has been officially unveiled!

Officially licensed by Porsche, 42056 is one of the largest and most complex sets ever released by the Technic line, featuring over 2,700 pieces and aimed at ages 16+.

Unlike the first spy-shots of this set, the final production version drops its camouflage paint-work as we expected and now wears a gloriously bright orange hue. 42056 also debuts several new pieces not seen before, rides on unique replica Porsche wheels and wears authentic Porsche decals throughout.

Lego Technic 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Review

The building process has been designed to mirror the way the real car is manufactured, which is an interesting variation from the usual Technic construction process, and each model contains a collectors’ book and an individual serial number, which means we fully expect many of these sets will sit forever unopened in the hands of speculators (boo).

That’s a shame, because 42056 contains some fabulous engineering which has raised the bar in terms of what can be expected from an official LEGO product.

Alongside the usual working steering, suspension and piston engine there is a functioning double-clutch gearbox complete with steering-wheel mounted paddles, just like the PDK transmission used on the real car – something our in-house engineers cautiously hoped for when they dissected the very first teaser image of this set back in January. With four speeds operable from the steering wheel we’re expecting some rubberised or elasticated witchcraft from LEGO’s design department, and it could be the most inventive function added to an official LEGO set in decades.

Opening doors, engine lid, glovebox and trunk all feature, as does Porsche branded luggage and a fully detailed interior with racing seats.

Available from June this year, we’re already saving up to get our hands on 42056 (unless anyone at LEGO is willing to give us a copy!), and we anticipate an RRP of around $300/£250.

Lego Porsche 911 GT3

With LEGO recently announcing the success of Carl Greatrix’s Caterham Seven Ideas project we’re feeling confident about the prospect of Malte Dorowski’s Porsche 911 GT3 RS reaching the 10,000 supporter mark that enables an official LEGO review. Malte recently released an updated version of his beautiful 911 replica and you can see more of the build – and vote for it to become an official LEGO set – by visiting his Flickr photostream here.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS – Picture Special

Lego Porsche 911 GT3 RS

No, not that Porsche 911 GT3 RS, but this one could become an official set too. Car-building legend Malte Dorowski has been refining his Model Team Porsches for years, and has now revealed a version of the legendary German sports car that could one day become an official LEGO set – if you vote for it.

Lego Porsche 911 GT3 Inside

Malte’s latest iteration is a top of the tree GT3 RS, complete with the iconic white and red colour scheme, and – as you can see in this image – the techniques used to create it are quite a step above any official LEGO set on sale.

We don’t expect a model this complicated to pass LEGO’s design requirements unedited, but we do think there is room in LEGO’s line-up for some increased complexity.

You can see all of the images of Malte’s incredible Model Team Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and vote for it to be considered as an official LEGO set, via the LEGO Ideas platform – click the link to make your vote count.
