With LEGO recently announcing the success of Carl Greatrix’s Caterham Seven Ideas project we’re feeling confident about the prospect of Malte Dorowski’s Porsche 911 GT3 RS reaching the 10,000 supporter mark that enables an official LEGO review. Malte recently released an updated version of his beautiful 911 replica and you can see more of the build – and vote for it to become an official LEGO set – by visiting his Flickr photostream here.
Today we have three brilliant cars to share with you, and all are products of the current LUGNuts Challenge ‘100 Ways to Win!’. The first is this, Thirdwigg‘s superb Technic recreation of the 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup. Resplendent in Octan livery, which easily adds another 40bhp on it’s own, Thirdwigg’s Carrera features working suspension, steering, a functioning gearbox and the Porsche’s famous rear-mounted flat-6 engine. No, not that Porsche 911 GT3 RS, but this one could become an official set too. Car-building legend Malte Dorowski has been refining his Model Team Porsches for years, and has now revealed a version of the legendary German sports car that could one day become an official LEGO set – if you vote for it.
Malte’s latest iteration is a top of the tree GT3 RS, complete with the iconic white and red colour scheme, and – as you can see in this image – the techniques used to create it are quite a step above any official LEGO set on sale.
We don’t expect a model this complicated to pass LEGO’s design requirements unedited, but we do think there is room in LEGO’s line-up for some increased complexity.

We were a little underwhelmed with LEGO’s 2016 Technic line-up when we released details back at the end of 2015. However, there was hope that better sets were to come; there was a gap in the numbering sequence. A hole in the range. A supercar shaped hole. And, as it turns out, a Porsche 911 shaped hole…
Yup, LEGO are bringing their first fully authorised official supercar set to market later this year! Expanding on their relationship with Porsche that was first developed for the Speed Champions line (alongside McLaren and Ferrari), and joining the official Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, MINI and Volvo partnerships, LEGO are set to release a spectacular Technic replica of Porsche’s legendary 911, and it looks i.n.c.r.e.d.i.b.l.e.
Set 42056 was revealed at the 2016 Nuremberg Toy Fair today, and it could well be the most amazing Technic flagship in LEGO’s history; a fully detailed replica of – we think – Porsche’s brutal 911 GT3 RS super car complete with (again – we think…) a working paddle-shift transmission!
There is no word on pricing or piece-count, and we expect the test-car camouflage to be replaced with a road car or racing livery before the set is finalised for production, but despite the unknowns we are properly excited by the prospect of LEGO’s latest partnership. It could also open the doors for further potential manufacturer-backed sets, as car companies begin to recognise the power such synergies can have on their brand’s future desirability.

TLCB regular and pro Lemur Tamer, Ralph Savelsberg, has built this rather neat Porsche 911. The car features multiple stud angles and off-sets, flush door hinges, quarter lights on the doors and a nicely shaped rear*

LEGO’s Speed Champions sets, featuring licensed partnerships with Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche, have been warmly received by the interwebs. Porsche-building legend Malte Dorowski got there long before LEGO though, and he’s built some versions of LEGO’s official 75912 Porsche set that are a little bit bigger… You can see more of Malte’s set of differently-sized Porsches on both Flickr and MOCpages.
Normally finding two quality vehicles would leave The Lego Car Blog Elves happily munching away on Smarties. In this case it would be yellow ones, because they’re the best kind. Unfortunately the Elves have also just discovered the rules to the Yellow Car Game, causing the biggest Elf-Fight that Mr. Airhorn has ever had to quell.
LatLug member Rolands Ķirpis has created a beautiful Porsche, very much in the style of the great Malte Dorowski. The car – previously blogged here – features a nicely detailed interior and can be seen in the company of an excellent Model Team style breakdown truck by clicking this link to the Latvian Lego Users Group Photostream.
The second excuse for one Elf to hit another was provided by Joe Perez (Mortal Swordsman). Working on a commission for the UK’s Lego professionals, Bright Bricks, Joe has built a ’69 Mustang. The car has opening doors and bonnet, with an engine underneath. The build is all the more impressive, as the subject was chosen by readers of Auto Trader magazine and Joe chose his supply of Lego pieces before he knew what the car was to be. The Elves, still on the hunt for scary Lego cars this Halloween, have discovered one of the scariest. The 1970s-1980s Porsche 911 might not look fearsome, but it’s responsible for more brown-stained pinstripe suits than probably any other car.
By the 1970s the Porsche 911 was producing a fair amount of power, but tyre, braking, and suspension technology was lagging some way behind. To make matters worse for unsuspecting bankers, the 911’s engine was lagging behind too – quite literally. Mounted behind the rear axel the heavy flat-6 caused a huge pendulum effect when cornering, swinging the car violently one way and then the other.
Sadly for the 911 and its owners, this meant many didn’t make it out of these decades in one piece. And if the unhinged handling wasn’t frightening enough, you could order your 911 with even more power – courtesy of Porsche themselves who bolted a turbocharger on (and in the process defined the term ‘turbo-lag’), or tuning specialists Singer, who created cars like the canary yellow example pictured here.
Built by Flickr’s Rolic this Model Team Singer 911 features all the design cues that made the car such a hit a few decades ago, and is so realistic it’ll probably end up smashed into a cupboard before long.

Over the past week The Lego Car Blog has been a bit more ‘Truck’ than ‘Car’. Today we return to our job description with a blog post Special to celebrate one of the team’s favourite builders, the incredible Malte Dorowski.
Malte has featured here several times over the years with his beautiful racing cars. Today – after some time away from the Lego community – he has finally returned, with this completely gorgeous Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo.
Built in 1974 and raced by the Martini Porsche works team, the Carrera RSR Turbo heralded a new dawn for racing cars, making 500bhp from just 2.1 litres with the aid of a huge turbocharger. Malte has recreated not only the car but also its incredible flat-6 engine in astounding detail, using a variety of unusual LEGO pieces ranging from flags to robot hands.
The Porsche’s bodywork is just as inventive, with elephant tusks, mini-figure SCUBA flippers and harpoons all making perfectly judged appearances. The Elves, like magpies, are drawn to shiny things. TLCB veterans Bing-Bong Brothers snared their attention today with a beautifully recreated Porsche 911 (964 era), built using LEGO’s limited palette of silver pieces.
