Old Grey

Here at The Lego Car Blog we’re basically seven year olds, so it tends to be fast, loud, and obnoxiously coloured vehicles that feature here. Not today though, as we’ve flipped to the other end of the vehicular spectrum for a vehicle that is very slow, and very grey.

This rather lovely vintage tractor is the work of MangaNOID of Eurobricks, who has based his creation on a 1950s Massey Ferguson. Manga’s model features a working 3-cylinder engine, differential, power take-off, three-point hitch, suspended drivers seat, steering, and positive caster, camber and toe for accurate old-timey tractor realism.

High Tech LEGO Projects | Book Review

We like rule breakers here at The Lego Car Blog. Thus when No Starch Press offered us a sneaky peak into a book with ‘rule-breaking inventions’ written on the cover, we had a take a look! Well, one of our readers did, seeing as we don’t have a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 set in the office, and re-coding this site nearly killed us. However reader Wilson Luk is far smarter than we are, and a better writer too; check out his assessment of No Starch’s dangerous new book below!

Ahhhh Robotics…

For every new breathtaking advancement in robotics, 10 memes come out declaring the end of humanity (Boston Dynamics, I’m looking at you). LEGO appears intent on speeding up robotic dominance with the new LEGO Mindstorms 51515 Robot Inventor set, the much anticipated successor to the EV3 Mindstorms set. While the new set offers a bunch of quality of life improvements with its new app and native scratch and python support, no one can discount how the new Gelo build looks eerily similar to Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot…

Luckily, our topic today is a little more human-friendly. Grady Koch’s new book High Tech LEGO Projects demonstrates that there is still a ton of life in the older EV3 kit, pushing the boundaries of what the 7-year-old kit can do, without the whole world-dominance vibe.

No Starch Press has kindly provided me with a print copy for this review. My particular copy may be a pre-production copy as it has a bit of a raised splatter texture on the back cover. Nonetheless, the actual contents of the book is clearly printed on nice semi-gloss paper. Colours and text come out well, ensuring no issues following build and programming instructions.

High Tech LEGO Projects is the most recent book tailored towards EV3 users from No Starch Press. This time around, High Tech LEGO Projects introduces some basic circuitry and hobby-grade sensors to the mix, extending the capabilities of the ageing EV3.

A wide range of projects are covered in the 12 chapters of this book, with 2 extra projects available for download from the No Starch Press website. Each project showcases a different electrical component either to use with the EV3, or simply to add to one of your existing or upcoming lego creations.

Many of the projects will require extra pieces beyond what is provided in the EV3 Mindstorms set. Most of these can be found on BrickLink/BrickOwl, while many of the electrical components and tools can be found at local or online electronic stores.

Get comfortable acquiring the extra LEGO pieces, but don’t get too attached to them. Some of these projects are not for the faint of heart. The second project already has you drilling holes through TWO technic gearbox pieces! I can already hear the collective screams of agony right now. The first time I saw the picture demonstrating where to drill, my first reaction was to cover the eyes of all my Lego mini-figs.

Game of Bricks – Light Kit (42111 Dom’s Dodge Charger) | Review

Here at TLCB we’ve taken a fairly backwards approach to employee payment. As in, no one gets paid anything. But why should we have all the fun when we could not pay you guys for doing work too! Cue Francesco Frangioja, who joins us here at TLCB to review one of Game of Bricks’ new lighting kits. For free. Because he’s great. Over to Francesco!

TLCB kindly offered me the chance to pick two Game of Bricks light kits for 2020 vehicle sets, and my first choice was the light kit for the LEGO Technic 42111 Dom’s Dodge Charger set. After a couple of weeks (due to the shipment), I finally had time to install the kit in the set for which it was intended.

The lighting kit comes in a cardboard box, black and premium quality, with only the logo of the manufacturer on it.

Inside the box I found: 

  • Seven numbered plastic bags with tiny LEDs stripes and the thin, very thin cables
  • Three un-numbered plastic bags with the battery box, some “junction” cable plus the control unit and the USB connector to connect the LEDs “circuit” to the battery box
  • One booklet with the explanation of what each component is and its use/purpose
  • A remote (because I got the remote/RC version of the kit)

The actual building instructions are found on the Game of Bricks’ website; a series of “photographic” steps that show where to place the individual “light points” and how to organize (where they have to pass) the various wiring. 

I’m already familiar with the installation of this kind of product (light kits from other manufacturers) and the instructions were very similar, so I was able to follow the steps for this set very easily. Installing all the front lights is pretty simple: you have to “squeeze” the various LED element between the respective/relative transparent piece and the underneath on which the transparent one is originally fixed.

After that, you have to place the “array stripes” in the position/as shown in the photo-instructions.

Because normally there is exactly zero space between a transparent piece and the stud below it, you need to push it in place carefully even with this super thin wire. In fact, compared to the kits of other manufacturers, the peculiarity of the kit from Game of Bricks is that only a few of the “light points” are glued into LEGO brick. In practice, only the bricks of set 42111 which have to be physically replaced with counterparts with the LED already wired and glued inside, have been inserted in the light kit. All other “light points” are realised by fixing the LED element between the transparent and to be illuminated LEGO element, and the stud of the underlying piece.

The rear section was just as easy to manage; once the wiring steps are completed, you need to attach the tiny connector to a “splitter piece”, also equipped with adhesive tape to fix it in the position indicated by the photographic instructions. The connectors are very thin, so the use of a modeling plier can make the job easier. The cables, although very thin, are very resistant to traction and torsion. You just have to pay attention to the “scissors effect”: if you “staple” them too hard between brick and stud, you risk that they get cut. Therefore, you must always pay a lot of attention and procedures gently and carefully. 

The battery box requires 3 AA-LR6 batteries and includes a female USB connector. It’s up to you to choice to fit it into the model (i.e. into the trunk) or to keep it outside the model. Just remember that you will need to be able to access the on/off button.

Once the installation is finished and all the LEDs are connected, the final result is really great. 

Keep in mind that the kit in my possession is the top version, the one with the highest number of lighting points and including remote control to manage the on/off of each group and some “lightshows”.

Unlike the light kits I have tried before previously, the solutions of modular wiring and the interlocking of the lighting elements between the transparent bricks and the stud below implemented by Game of Bricks are perhaps the two most significant plus: not having bricks with pre-glued LEDs inside, you do not have to do too many replacements of parts of the official set to be illuminated, as well as the modularity of the wiring, allow you to decide from time to time if and which lighting elements to insert and which not.

Kett This

Your first car was your best car. Well, it was almost definitely your worst car, at least in TLCB’s home nation where astronomical insurance costs prevent new drivers from owning anything with an engine larger than a lawnmower, but it was still your first taste of freedom.

However step back around ten years from your first actual roadworthy* vehicle, and you may have owned something even more special. For some of you it might have been the gloriously lethal Radio Flyer Wagon, alternatively it could have been this, the marvellous Kettler Kettcar.

Produced from the 1960s right up until Kettler’s sad bankruptcy at the start of this year, the Kettcar was a superb design that taught handbrake turns to decades of children.

Along with that simple handbrake the Kettcar was also fitted with a rudimentary gearbox, enabling drive via the pedals or neutral for free-wheeling down big hills, where that handbrake would be hopelessly inadequate.

Recreating the pedal drive, handbrake, and gearbox is Clemens Schneider, whose brilliant Technic recreation of the Kettler Kettcar was suggested to us by a reader. In fact so accurate is Clemens’ Technic replica that it would probably drive just like the real thing if you were small enough to fit inside.

LEGO Technic 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF CORSE #51 | Set Preview

It’s that time of year again, when the guard dogs at The LEGO Company’s HQ get the chance of an early Christmas treat in the form of Elf-based snacks. Fortunately our Elves are sneaky creatures with a zest for life, and thus some do make it back here to TLCB Towers with only a few bite marks. And the new LEGO Technic sets of course – otherwise they get catapulted back over the premier wall for another one-on-one with a German Shepherd.

No re-catapulting was required for today’s survivor though, as it returned with this; the brand new for 2021 LEGO Technic 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF Corse #51 set. Constructed from nearly 1,700 pieces 42125 is a hefty model, with all of the Technic Supercar perquisites you’d expect, including working steering, a V8 piston engine, and all-wheel independent suspension.

It’s also the first Technic set to replicate not just a real-world car, but a real-world racing version of a real-world car, with the #51 AF Corse 488 competing in the GTE World Endurance Championship including Le Mans, where it finished first in class in 2019 and second in 2020.

A wealth of stickers accurately recreate the AF Corse #51 livery (and the headlights…), and whilst the car does include a few System pieces for enhanced detail it does look a little more Technic-y than some other recent sets. Whether that’s a good thing or not will depend very much on your thoughts on what a Technic set should be.

Expect the new 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF CORSE set to cost around $170/£170 when it reaches stores in 2021, sitting at the top of the new LEGO Technic line-up and returning Ferrari (LEGO’s longest standing automotive partner) to the Technic range.

Does 42125 pave the way for the other Le Mans GTE racing cars to become official LEGO sets? With every recent GTE manufacturer (Porsche, Aston Martin, Ford, BMW, and Chevrolet) already in partnership with LEGO, we sure hope so!

Street Fighter

Street Fighter is one of the highest grossing and most loved video game franchises of all time. It’s also one of the worst movies. Being neither a video game nor a movie, this ‘Street Fighter’ supercar by Flickr’s Steph Ouell nevertheless allows us to link to the incredible movie trailer, and it’s also a great build to boot, with the full suite of Technic Supercar functions. I Don’t Want to Live on this Planet Anymore

Half of America believes the other half is lying, a deadly disease is confining us to our homes, and we’re at the tipping point of irreversible and catastrophic climate change (unless you’re in the half of America that thinks this is a lie). Sometimes we just want to give up and escape into the wilderness.

Flickr’s Thesuperkoala is aiding this fantasy today, courtesy of this thoroughly excellent off-road expedition truck, complete with everything needed to leave society behind. Koala’s creation is also fitted with superb working suspension and a full Power Functions remote control drivetrain, including steering, all-wheel-drive, and a high/low gearbox, enabling it to travel far off the beaten track.

It’s just what we need in 2020, and you can join us in imagining we’re a long way from everything at Thesuperkoala’s ‘4×4 Road and Expedition’ album on Flickr, where both this model and an equally good crane/flatbed version are available to view.

Brick Built Bimmer

Gosh do we hate the BMW X3. Not a much as the X7, which numerically we hate just over twice as much, but still. However, our thoughts on BMW’s affront to ‘compact’ SUV styling are – like pretty much everything we write – moot, because the X3 has been a phenomenal success for the German brand.

Now seventeen years and three generations in, around two million X3s have been produced, and today we can add one more to that number, courtesy of Jeroen Ottens and the brilliant Technic recreation you can see here.

Powered by two L Motors with a Medium Motor delivering the steering, Jeroen’s X3 can be controlled via bluetooth thanks to a third-party SBrick, which has also been programmed to operate the LED head and tail lights (including indicators), and the Servo controlled drive-mode select, which can send all the power to the rear wheels, 25% front and 75% rear, or 50/50 all-wheel-drive via a centre differential.

LEGO Technic 42124 Off-Road Buggy | Set Preview

Will any other 2021 Technic set be as good as the 42124 Control+ Off-Road Buggy? No, of course not.

Resembling both a real life off-road buggy and a Tamiya RC car, 42124 is a pink and blue wonder resplendent atop its new knobbly tyres, white rims, and excellent looking suspension. Even the ‘Xtreme’ stickers look good.

Brought back to TLCB Towers in the hands of one of the ‘specially selected’ TLCB Elves catapulted over The LEGO Company’s perimeter wall during our annual new set sneakathon, there has probably never been an official LEGO set more suited to our smelly little workers.

The Control+ app launched last year brings bluetooth remote control to 42124, allowing it to be controlled from a smartphone, Playstation controller, and many other bluetooth enabled devices, and alongside the aforementioned suspension it looks more than tough enough to shrug off inevitable crashes with household furniture/pets/family members.

In fact our only complaint is the interior’s a bit crap, but seeing as this is a Technic set that’s totally OK, as it’s supposed to be about working functions (cough, 42123 McLaren Senna, cough).  Aimed at ages 10+ the new 42124 Off-Road Buggy will reach stores for 2021, and we – and the Elves – can’t wait.

Tokyo Drift

None of the ‘Fast and the Furious’ movies are works of cinematic genius, and the third instalment ‘Tokyo Drift’ ranks below even the franchise average. However we do remember it was eminently watchable, mostly because of Nathalie Kelley, but also thanks to the ace Japanese machinery* used throughout the film.

This was our star car, the magnificent Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, as recreated here brilliantly in Technic form by ArtemyZotov of Eurobricks.

Built to full Technic Supercar specification, Artemy’s VeilSide RX-7 includes working steering, independent double wishbone suspension, a 4-speed sequential gearbox, and an incredible working recreation of the car’s twin-rotor wankel engine.

There are also opening doors, hood and trunk, working locks, plus a detailed interior and engine bay, and there’s much more to see at the Eurobricks forum, including a link to building instructions. Skid Marks

The Lego Car Blog Elves, as has been well documented on these pages, love to commit acts of extreme violence on one another. We’re not really sure why, but as we suspect a trip inside the Elven mind to uncover the reasons for this evolutionary oddity would raise more questions than answers, we’re content to let it be.

Today’s source of mythical mischief comes courtesy of JLiu15 of Flickr, who has recreated this neat remotely controlled tracked loader. A suite of Power Functions motors provide the drive, skid-steering, and linear-actuator-driven bucket elevation and tipping, which the Elf at the controls used first to first scoop up its fellow workers that weren’t paying attention, then drop them onto the floor to run them over.

We now have some Elven skid marks to clear up, so whilst we do that you can head to JLui15’s ‘Tracked Loader’ album to see more, before we return later on today with a very different sort of skidding vehicle…

LEGO Technic 42123 McLaren Senna GTR | Set Preview

It’s that time of year again, when shadowy figures scurry through the night in search of things they didn’t know they wanted. No, not Black Friday, but the annual Elven unearthing of LEGO’s new Technic sets!

One of the ‘lucky’ Elves chosen to be catapulted over the walls of The LEGO Company HQ returned a little while ago with this (and only a few Alsatian teeth marks), which we can now show you following LEGO’s official unveiling. This is the new for 2021 42123 McLaren Senna GTR.

Following the brands’ previous partnership within the Speed Champions line-up, the Senna becomes the first McLaren to become an official Technic set (although it won’t be the only real-world car to be immortalised in Technic for 2021…).

Expected to cost around $50/£45 when it reaches stores, the 830-piece 42123 McLaren Senna GTR looks quite pricey for a mid-range set despite the high parts count, but perhaps the ’10+’ on the box hints at a complexity within that justifies the price of admission.

We’d be surprised though, as 42123 appears only to have working steering, a miniature V8, and opening doors, which is a long way short of what we would usually expect from a Technic set targeted at ages ten and up.

Still, what 42123 misses in working features it attempts to cover (literally) with a great many stickers, with a vast array of printed and be-stickered parts helping to add visual realism to the set’s complicated (and parts intensive) bodywork.

We’re sure that LEGO know what they’re doing and their focus groups have determined that stickers trump features in the minds of ten year olds, but we’d happily trade a few ‘GTR’ decals for working suspension.

The other officially-licensed Technic 2021 set it is then…

Green Machine

As TLCB’s home nation has just confirmed that the sale of new non-zero emission vehicles (that’s petrol, diesel, LPG, and Hybrid) will be banned in just nine years time, this humble corner of the internet is getting with the times and posting something green. Well, it is.

Lasse Deleuran‘s John Deere 6130R is very green indeed. In fact it’s very nearly as green as LEGO’s own excellent 42054 Claas Xerion 5000 set, with which Lasse’s model shares its scale and rear hitch mechanism (meaning implements designed for the Claas set will also fit this).

It also includes a wide range of mechanical functionality, including a working 4-cylinder engine, functioning steering, and a selectable PTO via a lever in the cab.

My Other Car’s a Boat

LEGO’s 42093 Chevrolet Corvette set spawned several B-Model entries into our 2020 Lock-Down B-Model Competition, including off-roaders, sports cars, and even a Formula-E racing car. This is Grohl’s 42093 alternate, and he’s decided to create something altogether more buoyant.

The Corvette’s body panels have been repurposed into a rather neat looking speedboat hull, inside which is a V8 engine turned by hidden wheels, which drives the rear propeller. Said propellor is also synchronised with the rudder and concealed steering front wheel, so they all work beautifully as the model is pushed across the floor. Simply Flying

This odd contraption is a gyrocopter, a sort-of-helicopter with an un-powered lift rotor, which instead spins in the wind as the rear propellor drives the vehicle forward. It looks terrifically dangerous as only the maddest (and usually cheapest) form of transport can, with paave‘s minimalistic looking Technic version being pretty much as robust and complex as the real thing.

Paave’s version includes complete flight controls with the main rotor pitch and yaw controlled via the joystick, the rudder via pedals, and a working two-cylinder piston engine linked to the propellor.
