600 Redux

Britain feels like it has returned to the 1970s. Inflation is ludicrous, everyone’s on strike, and it’s only a matter of time before brown patterned wallpaper makes a comeback.

Cue Jonathan Elliott, who has also returned to 1971 via this superb remake of one of the first ever LEGO vehicle sets, the 600 Ambulance. Whilst the original set is a somewhat low-res right-angled affair, Jonathan’s remake is a gorgeous, highly detailed, and surprisingly functional model, wonderfully recreating the station-wagon-based ambulances that were commonly used half a century ago.

The Boo Boo Bus

The 1972 Collins ‘Crusader’ Type-II Ambulance – or ‘Boo Boo Bus’ – was Ford Econoline-based ambulance produced for domestic use by America’s emergency services.

We love humble, useful vehicles like this here at The Lego Car Blog, and this one has been built beautifully by regular bloggee 1saac W. of Flickr. Everything is LEGO, including the decals used to create the window frame and (parts of) the red stripe, and there’s more to see of 1saac’s Boo Boo build at his photostream.

The emergency services are the everyday heroes that have been thrown into the spotlight both during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, and in the subsequent protests, riots, and social disorder that seems to be infecting Western society as much as the disease the proceeded it.

It’s a hard enough job to do without having bottles thrown at you, but sadly that’s what’s happening, despite the fact that the emergency services will work just as hard to save the bottle thrower as the innocent bystander in the event they’re needed.

This superb FDNY ambulance comes from TLCB regular Ralph Savelsberg in his trademark Miniland style. Based on a Ford Super Duty extra cab, Ralph’s model replicates the livery and details of the real ambulance beautifully, and he’s included a neat paramedic figure too. Sprinting to Save

The world’s emergency services battle to save us every single day, with the current Coronavirus pandemic highlighting in particular what an incredible job they do. Of course they need the tools to do the job, and that’s what they’ve got in the Netherlands with their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances. Flickr’s Ralph Savelsberg is the builder behind this one, recreating both the converted van and its complicated Dutch chevrons over EU-mandated yellow paint job with brilliant accuracy. Blade Runner wasn’t all about the ‘Spinner‘. Largely forgotten, the movie featured several vehicular oddities that appeared alongside the famous hovercar, each managing to look both futuristic and decidedly sheddy at the same time. Flickr’s keiichi kamei remembers two such designs, the ‘Armadillo‘ van and the ‘Deckard‘ car, each shown here in both civilian and civil service roles.

Previous bloggee keiichi has recreated the designs wonderfully in mini-figure scale, with some ingenious building techniques and custom decals used to enhance the models’ accuracy. Head to the futuristic time of November 2019 (yes, Blade Runner is now set in the past!) via the links above.

Everyone likes a vehicle that goes ‘NEE NAW!’. Here are two, a fire truck and ambulance each built beautifully by Flickr’s Koala Yummies and packed with neat details, from brick-built stripes and pump controls to a fully fitted emergency bay. This excellent (and enormous) Technic recreation of the ‘Ecto-1’ Cadillac Ambulance from ‘Ghostbusters’ comes from thewdarren of Flickr and it’s packed with bustin’ paraphernalia. And a V8 engine, because that’s cool. Lego Toyota HiAce Ambulance

Chances are that if you’re reading this from (or have ever been to) Asia, then you’ve been in a Toyota HiAce. They are everywhere, performing every function it’s possible for a van to do. Hopefully though, you haven’t had to travel in this particular variant; the HiMedic Ambulance as used throughout Japan.

This superb Lego version of the Toyota emergency response vehicle comes from Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist) of Flickr, who has not only recreated the outside of the HiMedic beautifully, there’s a fully-kitted interior behind the working sliding doors too.

Lego Sci-Fi UN

It’s Thursday, and for reasons unknown The Lego Car Blog is going spacey! Today’s finds fast-forward us to a time when hospitals can hover and the UN may actually be an effective organisation. No that’s silly, but hospitals probably will be able to hover.

First up (above) are the United Nations who have got themselves one heck of a cool looking buggy! Built by Flickr’s taxonlazar, making his TLCB debut, it features some gloriously retro Technic rims, custom mini-figures, and very un-UN-looking machine gun.

Next, and doubtless far more effectual, is Ted Andes‘ ‘M-E-H’ (mobile emergency hospital), surely otherwise known as an ambulance Ted? No matter, it looks the business in Red Cross livery and is ready to ‘mitigate a broad range of epidemics, from zombie apocalypses to race fans getting alcohol poisoning from Malort‘.

Lego Chevrolet Fleetmaster

The Lego Car Blog staff might all have clothes slightly too small for them after Christmas but the Elves, locked up over the festive period, are hungry. Imagine the delight of the first Elf back then, when it was awarded not one but four meal tokens. Will it spread its four meals out, or binge on four dinners in one go? I think we all know the answer to that.

The cause of this Elven gluttony is Vibor Cavor (aka Veeborg) who has built four beautiful versions of the mid-1940s Chevrolet Fleetmaster. Clockwise from top left is a police fastback, a taxi sedan, a fire chief coupe, and a delivery-bodied ambulance conversion. Each model is wonderfully detailed inside and out, includes opening doors, hood and trunk/tailgate, and features hand-of-God steering.

Yesterday’s belated birthday celebrations have left a trail of bashed and battered Elves across the Axminster in the The Lego Car Blog offices. The effects of jelly and ice-cream on our mythological workforce was quite startling, following their meagre diet of meal tokens and Smarties.

Ambulance

“Medic!!”, is a cry that can often be heard screamed in Elvish across the TLCB executive editorial penthouse. Our research team enjoy every possible opportunity to smush each other into the deep shag carpet. Well, we assume that’s what they’re shouting. To be honest we’re a monoglot lot and haven’t a clue what they’re saying. We tend to conduct negotiations with our crew in terms of the carrot and stick (Mr. Airhorn and Smarties).

If Elvish paramedics were to respond to the call, they’d do well to turn up something like this vintage VW Splitscreen Barndoor Ambulance from redfern1950s on Flickr. Included in its description are details of how these vehicles differed from the minibuses from which they were converted. Redfern’s photostream is well worth a visit. It also contains fire engine, pick-up and hearse versions of this classic vehicle, plus his interpretation of Colin Furze’s hoverbike.
