Turbo Twin

The early years of turbocharging – characterised by  chronic lag and spiky handling – were dominated by a few companies; BMW, Porsche, and – more weirdly – Renault.

Weirdly, because Renault didn’t have a sports sedan or sports car to put a turbo into, so they put one into their dinky 5 supermini. And it was mega.

Mid-rear engined, rear-wheel-drive, and powered by a turbocharged 1.4 litre making 160bhp, the R5 Turbo was a smash hit, and now you can create one for yourself if you own another ‘80s turbocharged icon, LEGO’s excellent 10295 Porsche 911 set.

Featuring working steering, a detailed interior and engine, plus opening doors and hood, Firas Abu-Jaber’s Renault 5 Turbo alternate is the perfect turbocharged twin to the 10295 donor.

Mining Cornwall

The Cornwall Peninsula in the very south of the United Kingdom is famous for its pasties, beaches, cider, and – at one time – mining.

This began with silver and tin, plundered by the Romans, and ended with coal, plundered by the Government.

Mines were a combination of dangerous ‘pits’ and open cast, with the latter exploited by enormous mechanisation in later years. This is one such machine from the time, the 390-ton Ruston-Bucyrus 195-B electric rope shovel.


Recreated in 1:28.5 form, this spectacular replica of the Ruston-Bucyrus 195-B comes from recent bloggee Beat Felber, to work alongside his Terex 33-11C mining truck.

Like his previously featured Terex, Beat’s electric rope shovel is packed with electronics to bring it to life, with four Power Functions motors driving the tracks, two the swing motion, another the main winch, and an eighth the dipper handle. No, we don’t know what a dipper handle is.

Finally two CaDA micromotors power the bucket door release and motorised access ladder, there are two sets of LEDs lighting the model, and the whole lot is controllable remotely via twin SBricks.

It’s a hugely impressive feat of engineering, with lots more of the model to see at Beat’s ‘Ruston-Bucyrus 195-B’ Flickr album – where it’s pictured alongside the Terex 33-11C with which it would have worked mining Cornish coal.

An Even Bigger Accident


As has been well documented on this website, Ford Mustangs crash. A lot. Thus Ford have given their seventh generation Mustang an extra 330bhp… Right.

Cue this superb brick-built replica of the Ford Mustang GTD by Flickr’s SP_LINEUP, which recreates the 815bhp special edition ‘stang brilliantly, and is probably rather easier to repair when it’s inevitably binned into a bus shelter.

3D-printed wheels, opening doors, a detailed interior, and fantastically intricate bodywork all feature, and there’s more to see of SP’s superbly presented GTD at his photostream via the link above.

A V10 Tip

TLCB top tip; want a rear-wheel-drive Japanese V10-engined icon but can’t afford a Lexus LFA? Get yourself a 1970s Isuzu truck!

Yes the Isuzu V10ss had a V10 engine under the curvy cab, providing the power for all sorts of heavy duty applications across Asia.


This spectacular replica of the classic Japanese truck comes from previous bloggee TsungNing Lee, who has recreated the V10ss beautifully.

Lime Crush


It’s been a quiet week here at TLCB Towers. Elves have returned, creations have been published, and no-one’s been squashed at all. Until today.

This enormous lime green machine is a 1980s Terex 33-11C, actually one of Terex’s smaller mining trucks, and one that was used extensively in Britain’s open cast mines.

It comes from Flickr’s Beat Felber who has not only expertly recreated the 33-11C’s exterior, he’s fitted his spectacular creation with remote control drive, steering, and tipping, courtesy of an SBrick programmable Bluetooth controller and a suite of Power Functions motors.

Being a mining truck of course, Beat’s Terex is much too slow to run over any TLCB Elves, but the Elf that found it took great care loading it up with gravel from the pot plant in the corridor, reversed slowly up to some of its unsuspecting colleagues, and promptly tipped the load on top of them. And then ran them over. Sigh.

DAF-ish

When is a DAF not a DAF? When it’s a GINAF. No, us neither, but this is indeed a GINAF, specifically a M3132-S 360 ATI, which admittedly sounds like a washing machine.

It comes from DAF-building specialist Arian Janssens, who has captured the enormous three axle hook-lift / tipper / crane / trailer arrangement superbly.

Multi-axle steering, a working crane, removable tipping container and hook-lift all feature, and you can see more of this giant GINAF on Flickr via the link.

Z Tune

This might look that Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), but it’s actually way more special.

Fitted with a carbon fibre bodywork and a 500bhp engine by Nissan’s own NISMO motorsport arm to celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2005, just 19 NISMO Z Tune GT-Rs were built, all in silver. Which is why we have a blue one…

Still, it does look tremendous, coming from previous bloggee SP_LINEUP, who has recreated the rarest of all the R34 GT-Rs brilliantly in brick.

Stripes on the Streets


‘Street takeovers’ don’t happen in our home nation. Partly because we don’t have a grid system giving wide intersections, but mostly because an economy hatchback isn’t really the right tool.

Americans of course have it much easier, with vehicle-based douchbaggery in reach for all thanks to a plethora of cheap, powerful, but crap sedans. Cue Mihail Rakovskiy’s splendid Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which you guarantee on any given night in America will be doing donuts in the middle of a four-lane junction.

Mihail’s Model Team version captures the real Camaro superbly, with a highly detailed engine bay, interior and drivetrain, opening doors, hood and trunk, and a pair of racing stripes that add at least 50bhp.

A Proper Porsche


Porsche are in big trouble. Despite the success of their EVs (and perhaps because of it…), Porsche are currently undertaking a rapid de-electrification of their future models. Because whilst a tax-avoiding businessman may want his luxury sedan to be electric, the sports car customer wants an engine. Cue a 92% drop in Porsche’s operating profit and a knock-on effect elsewhere in the Volkswagen empire, as the cancellation of Porsche EV platforms hits other brands.

But fear not readers, because today we have a real Porsche. Open-top, combustion-powered, rear-wheel-drive, and the only thing the battery does is start the engine. This is of course a 1950s Porsche-Diesel tractor.

Built by MP LEGO Technic Creations, this gorgeous recreation of the vintage Porsche features working steering, a single-cylinder piston engine connected to the rear wheels with a selectable power-take-off, a high/low gearbox, and a functional rear hitch.

The SS


From one end General Motors’ cool spectrum (well, almost. There was the Chevrolet Matiz) to the other. This is the glorious 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, with racing stripes and a 7.4 litre V8 that could be optioned up to 450bhp.

This spectacular brick-built version of the top dog Chevelle comes from Jakub Marcisz who has updated his previous iteration of his model, and features working steering, a two-speed gearbox, and V8 engine, plus opening doors, hood and trunk.

Top G


The Lego Car Blog Elves like Lamborghinis and monster trucks and things with rocket launchers. Which means they’re pretty unimpressed by this. The Lego Car Blog staff however, rather like humdrum mundanity, and in Europe few things are more humdrum and mundane than an old Opel Astra Caravan (also known as the Vauxhall Astra Estate).

The G-series Astra was launched in 1998, looked quite fantastically boring even back then, and was available in a bewildering range of bodystyles and engines, with a hatch, sedan, station wagon, van, coupe and convertible, a dozen petrol and half-a-dozen diesel engines, production across eleven countries, and Holden and Chevrolet versions too.

Most G-series Astras were bland 1.6 litre petrol hatch and station wagons though, just like this splendid brick-built example from Flickr’s Mansur Soeleman, who has recreated his grandfather’s final car as a gift to him.

Peak Nineties Nissan

Japanese performance cars, and Nissan in particular, used to be on top of the world. With all-wheel-drive, all-wheel-steering, and a twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine, the ‘R32’ generation Nissan GT-R dominated early-’90s Class A racing.

Around 50,000 road-going examples were produced alongside the racing counterparts, with the GT-R quickly becoming one of the cars of Japan’s golden performance era.

This phenomenal brick-built replica comes from Eurobricks’ NoEXIST, who has not only replicated the R32 GT-R’s exterior wonderfully via a blend of Technic and System parts, he’s included the car’s defining all-wheel-drive, all-wheel-steering, and twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine, plus all-wheel independent suspension, working steering, and opening doors, hood and trunk.

Insert Low Level Drug Dealer

Now this is a common sight in our home nation. The badly-modified ’90s BMW M3; ill-fitting bodykit, 3D-lettered private registration plate, and absolutely, without question, a low-level drug dealer behind the wheel.

They’re our version of an ageing Trans-Am, and they are to be avoided like a sexually transmitted disease. Which will most likely also be present in the carpets.

This one (in both coupe and convertible forms) comes from Flickr’s ZetoVince, and looks like every single E36 M3 parked on double-yellow lines in the crap parts of London. Which means Zeto has nailed it.

Double Dutch

We’re trucking across the Netherlands today, thanks to two brilliant brick-built Dutch trucks. Well, one’s German, but it’s in use by a Dutch building materials company, so it still counts.

The first (above) is the work of serial bloggee Arian Janssens, and is a lovely classic DAF FA 3300 ATI with a matching drawbar trailer in tow. Working steering, openable load areas, and beautiful detailing all feature, and you can see more of Arian’s DAF via the link above.

Our second Dutch truck (below) is a 2010s MAN TGX, also outfitted with a three-axle trailer, plus a crane, a superbly replicated livery, and a suite of remote control motors to bring it to life. Flickr’s z_onno is its maker and you can see all the images of this excellent modern-day MAN via the link in the text above.

Insert Shiny Meathead

We can’t see a ’60s black Dodge Charger without hearing “…Family…”, mumbled in barely comprehensible English.

But shiny meathead and terrible dialogue aside, the second-generation Dodge Charger is nevertheless an iconic American muscle car.

Produced from just 1968 to 1970, the Charger’s base engine was a 5.2litre V8 (a still big 3.7 six-cylinder would arrive later), and rose to a gargantuan 7.0 litre Hemi. Because the oil crisis was still three years away…

Until then though, fuel economy was of little concern to Americans, and the Charger was a riotous success, with almost 100,000 units produced in that short run.

This fantastic ‘Icons’ scale example comes from previous bloggee Szunyogh Balázs (aka gnat.bricks), and features opening doors, hood and trunk, a superbly detailed (and easily removable) engine and transmission, and a highly realistic drivetrain and interior too.
