Truckers of the Caribbean

Lego Pirates TruckThe Elves, with their tiny minds and penchant for cartoon-style violence, love the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Ok, well maybe not the third one but no-one liked that. So there was much excitement today when one of the troop found this highly modified Scania R560 truck on Flickr by TLCB regular BricksonWheels. His latest work echoes the European truck modifying scene; chrome, lots of lights and a seriously impressive paint job. BricksonWheels’ captures all the essentials and also throws in some Power Functions remote control features too.

See the full gallery of this amazing creation and read how it was built here, and you can read TLCB’s interview with the builder in the Master MOCers series here.

Forgotten Hero

Lego Ilyushin II-2Until now we’d not seen a Russian World War 2 fighter recreated in LEGO. Perhaps this is because the US and UK wrote much of post-war history, or because Russia’s contribution was quickly forgotten due to its Stalin-esque links and the Cold War.

This one-sided praise has gifted the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang with everlasting fame, whilst Russia’s contributions lie largely ignored. Which is shame, because this plane, the Ilyushin II-2, repelled the German invasion of Russia and is in fact the most numerous miltary plane ever made. In sheer numbers, no aircraft made a larger contribution to halting the spread of Naziism. Flickr’s Dornbi gives the Ilyushin some much needed recognition, and you can see the full gallery at the link.

Fly Past

Lego F-35BPerhaps the best ‘in flight’ photograph of a Lego creation we’ve seen, this fantastic F-35B can be found on Flickr via Corvin Stichert.

The Peoples’ Choice

Lego 41999 Alternative B Model

Technic Man is our kind of builder; his MOCpage is full of properly engineered Technic vehicles. His latest prompted several of you to contact us via The Lego Car Blog Feedback page to ask if it could be featured here, so here it is!

This MAN TGX truck is a good model in its own right, but is even more impressive when you discover it’s built solely from the parts of LEGO’s 2013 41999 Rock Crawler. And for that, we like Technic Man even more, as many of LEGO’s 41999 sets will stay unopened in the basements of speculators and collectors, never to see the light of day or feel the hands they were designed for.

You can read our review of 41999 here, and if you own one, take a leaf out of Technic Man’s book, and have some fun with it!

On Tonight’s Top Gear…

Lego Top Gear, Clarkson, Hammond, May, Stig…Richard, James and I undergo some plastic surgery, and the Stig races a car that you can build yourself!

Ralph Savelsberg aka Mad Physicist immortalises the Top Gear team in Lego.

Robots in Disguise

Lego TransformersThe Lego Car Blog Elves love the Transformers movies. Robots, cars, explosions, Megan Fox, and almost no plot at all, combine to create a kind of love only otherwise found in fans of annoying Canadian pop-stars. Occasionally, just occasionally, we are nice to the little turds, and this week for some reason we were feeling generous. So a DVD of the original 1980s Transformers Cartoon series (something the Elves had no awareness of) was bought, and it’s been on loop in the office ever since.

Unfortunately this meant that yesterday not a single Elf left the office as they were all too engrossed in the animated adventures, and thus we had nothing to post. To combat this a new policy has been initiated; bring back a creation, and then you can watch cartoons. Within 20 minutes we had a find, and it was only to be expected that it would be of the Transformers variety.

MOCpages’ Chris Roach, something of a Transformers extraordinaire, is the builder behind this cartoon-spec G1 Ratchet of the Autobots. It really transforms too, by – as a guess – witchcraft and magic. See the transformation at Chris’ MOCpage via the link above, whilst we watch some cartoons with the Elves.

Telehandler

Technic TelehandlerThis good old-fashioned Technic telehandler was discovered by the Elves on Flickr. Bobofrutx has included 4-wheel steering and of course a telescopic bucket arm for all that telehandling. See more at the link. Just don’t let the Elves follow you – we’re not rescuing any more from the bucket.

Bags of Fun

Lego Technic LamborghiniThis Lamborghini SV by Brickshelf’s Spiderbrick features all the usual Technic goodies (suspension, all-wheel-drive etc.), but it also features something we’ve never seen before; working airbags. Yes, this car really will deploy both driver and passenger airbags in the event of a frontal collision. Controlled by a Mindstorms NXT and pneumatic system, we’re not sure whether the ‘bags inflate suddenly via stored pressure, or whether the driver will knock themselves out on the steering wheel and awake to find a gradually inflating balloon pressing against their gentleman’s area, but either way it’s one of the most innovative ideas we’ve seen in Lego form. Check out the system and the vehicle it’s fitted to at the link above.

M3 Halftrack

Halftrack-M3-500w

This WWII vintage M3 Halftrack is the work of Swedish builder =DoNe= (a.k.a. Viktor). The Elves were attracted to it as, despite it only being seven studs wide, there was loads of room in the front to drive it and even more space to climb in the back and play with the machine gun. We at TLCB Towers liked this MOC because of the neat techniques that Viktor has used to get the shape right for the front of the vehicle. The use of plates with clips to make the mudguards and radiator grille works very well. There’s also some nice parts usage in the running gear inside the tracks and the Technic pins in the windscreen frame. You can see more details of this build by clicking this link to its MOCpages listing. In the meantime, can anybody lend The Lego Car Blog some scissors? An Elf has got tangled in the Halftrack’s working winch and we’re going to have to cut him out…

Rat Race

Lego BMW Rat RodHere at The Lego Car Blog we’re sometimes preoccupied with the pretty, the powerful and the prestigious when it comes to the cars we publish. Today we rectify this, with an old BMW. An old BMW which has the whole office yearning to own it. _Tiler‘s BMW 2002 Rat Rod is one of our favourite creations of 2013, and best of all it’s based on a real BMW Rat Rod, one you can view in _Tiler’s links. _Tiler’s work has appeared here quite frequently over the past few weeks, but when it looks like perfect we can’t help but feature it. See the whole superb gallery at the link above.

Lego BMW 2002

Ford GT

Lego Ford GTTLCB newcomer t.munz got the Elves very excited today. His Model Team Ford GT is what this blog was made for. See the full gallery on flickr at the link above.

Mr. Spock

Lego Motorbike Kawasaki Vulcan Niether we nor the Elves like Star Trek (there are no cars in it). Accordingly we know virtually nothing about it other than there was an amusingly Scottish bloke called – imaginatively – Scotty, and another bloke with pointy ears who was a Vulcan, whatever one of those is. So, armed with this singular fact and a Kawasaki Vulcan motorbike by LegoMarat, we came up with the title above.

Since we’ve now exhausted our knowledge of sci-fi shows we’ll move on to the bike, which is so brilliant we weren’t sure it was Lego at first. But it is, coming complete with chromed wheels and shocks, a beautifully detailed engine, and probably the best handlebars ever made from Lego. Check it out on Flickr via the link above, and you can read TLCB’s other articles featuring LegoMarat’s work via the search function at the bottom of the page.

No Income Tax, No VAT…

Lego Only Fools and HorsesBritish readers of The Lego Car Blog will already be singing the next line. ‘Only Fools and Horses’ was a long running British sit-com set in Peckham, London, between 1981 and 1991, in which two dodgy dealers tried to earn a living outside normal retail boundaries. Easily one of the greatest comedies ever made ‘Only Fools and Horses’ featured hundreds of classic moments and one pretty ropey van.

Optimistically named the ‘supervan’, Reliant’s commercial Regal in various shades of yellow became one of the most famous vehicles on television. Rumour has it that boxer Ricky Hatton owns the real Reliant now, so if you want it you’ll have to build one yourself. Which is what TLCB regular and Brothers Brick writer Ralph Savelsberg did. See more on Flickr.

Paddy Wagon

Lego Vintage Police VanThe Elves have been busy over the weekend, bringing us back lots of lovely Town scale creations to blog. This one is by one of our favourite builders _Tiler. As usual for builds of this type, Flickr is where you need to head.
