Lego Liberty Walk Ferrari 458 Italia

As a rule staff at The Lego Car Blog do not like exotic ‘tuning’ companies. Catering for the rich but utterly tasteless (of which there is burgeoning population world-wide), they modify vehicles that took $billions to painstakingly develop over many many years, but which can apparently be improved with stick-on carbon fibre and some new badges.

However, last year there was one exception to the rule – the utterly gorgeous Ferrari 458 Italia by Liberty Walk. Flickr’s Aaden Hughes thought so too, and he’s recreated the remarkable car from our favourite plastic blocks.

Unfortunately though, for every car like Liberty Walk’s 458 there are at least ten like this, this or this. And they all seem to be German. If you win the lottery, you know what not to do!

Lego Ferrari 250GT California

This, ladies and gentleman, is the best creation you will see in 2014. It’s the best creation we have ever publicised. It’s probably the best Lego vehicle in the world. This is a Ferrari 250GT California built by Certified LEGO Professional Ryan McNaught aka ‘thebrickman’.

The Ferrari 250GT California is one of the world’s most sought after cars. Appearing in the 1980s cult film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (sort of – the movie’s most famous scene actually used a disguised MGB) did 250GT values plenty of favours, but it was already world-famous long before its starring role.

In the early ’60s Ferrari 250s were driven by Steve McQueen and James Coburn amongst others, and it’s Coburn’s own vehicle that holds the record for the highest price ever paid for a car at auction; $10.7million by British radio and television host Chris Evans in 2008.

Ryan’s astonishing recreation of the 1961 masterpiece contains an estimated 50,000 LEGO bricks – making it almost 1:4 scale – and took him almost four weeks to build.

Technic Supercars!

Welcome to The Lego Car Blog’s new series! Today marks the start of our collaboration with one of the top Lego Vehicle groups on Flickr, the superb Head Turnerz.

Head Turnerz’ members have supplied our Elves with a wealth of blog-worthy vehicles since the group’s inception in late 2013. We’ve decided to extend the mini-figure grab-hand of partnership to the group administrators in order to bring you the Top 5 creations in a variety of categories over the coming months.

Jorgeopesi’s Pagani Huayra is not just as visually stunning as the real thing, but with a working 7-speed manual gearbox, remote controlled drive, and a huge list of other amazing features, this Pagani is our favourite Technic Supercar ever. The incredible Crowkillers takes a close second place with his amazing 997 Porsche GT3. Porsche’s 911 is very difficult to replicate in Lego, but Crowkillers has built the most accurate 911 we have ever seen – and it’s not just the body that’s accurate, there’s even a working 6-speed transmission hooked-up to the famous flat-6 engine. Lego Technic McLaren MP4-12C

Dirk Klijn’s McLaren MP4-12C has a 3+Reverse gearbox and is one of the most visually appealing Technic Supercars on the web. But that’s not all. It’s also fully modular – meaning that the body can be completely separated from the chassis and each component removed, replaced and upgraded with ease – exactly how LEGO themselves design their products. Lego Technic Volkswagen Beetle

It wouldn’t be a Technic Supercar Top 5 without one of Sheepo‘s incredible models, and what’s better than a Volkswagen Beetle?! Sheepo’s VW Bug is not your typical ‘supercar’, but it is a technical masterpiece featuring everything that a real Beetle does, and it’s exceptionally detailed inside and out. Sheepo’s brilliant bug can be found on Flickr here, plus on his own website via www.sheepo.es.

Sariel’s incredible Enzo Ferrari comes in at number 5 with beautiful body lines and more functions than you can believe! With full independent suspension, a manual 4-speed gearbox, V12 piston engine, pneumatically opened doors, moving accelerator pedal, electrically adjustable seats, automated rear wing and much more, the only way to see it all is to take a visit to Sariel’s excellent website.

It’s the weekend, hurrah! This does mean though, that TLCB Team will be drunk*, and we didn’t plan ahead any posts. Oops. Fortunately Sam the First returns as a Guest Blogger and keeps TLCB functioning. Over to Sam…

Previously Featured TFOL Harry Gravett’s mind must be an interesting place. When I think of ‘difficult to build’, I think more along the lines of a Nissan 350Z, or a Porsche. Harry though, thinks of a TVR Sagris or a Ferrari 360 CS with brick built stripes.

His most recent model is stunning, being this gorgeous Ferrari 330 P4. This one is not only a tough cookie to recreate, Harry’s done it with brick-built windows and windscreen, and he’s nailed the shaping. The functions are all there and working ever so fine with some top class techniques used, and he’s captured the character of a 60’s prancing horse beautifully.

Yes, his mind is an interesting place indeed. You can find Harry’s wonderful creation via his photostream and his MOCpage.

If we’re honest here at TLCB Towers we’re an egotistical bunch. We like to think these posts are about the creation pictured, but really we’re here to satisfy our craving for attention. The Elves on the other hand are just here for the food and an occasional screening of a Transformers DVD.

However this post really is all about the MOC, because this Ferrari 458 Italia might just be the most beautifully designed, built and photographed creation that we’ll post all year. Nathanael L aka Lego Builder Jr. is the brains (and hands) behind the build, and you can see more of his enchanting re-creation of Maranello’s finest at either Flickr or MOCpages via the links above.

Nathanael’s model is also available on LEGO’s ‘Ideas’ website (formally ‘Cuusoo’), whereby 10,000 votes could see it reach production as an official LEGO set. We’re not sure if the (brilliant) roof would pass LEGO’s set-suitability criteria, but it’d be a small concession to replace it with a more orthodox design. LEGO already partner with Ferrari to produce officially licensed products, so Nathanael’s model really could be a possibility. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Lego Ferrari 250 GT SWB Ferris Beuller

One of the defining coming-of-age films of the 1980s, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off told the story of one young man’s quest to have a day of extraordinary leisure. It starred Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey, Mia Sara, and even (briefly) Charlie Sheen, but the real star of the movie is of course the gorgeous 1961 Ferrari GT California.

TLCB favourite Ralph Savelsberg (aka Mad Physicist) has recreated the beautiful classic from the film (complete with Ferris figure) in his un-mistakable building style, and you can see all the photos at Ralph’s photostream here.

Lego Technic Hot Rod

Today’s double-post takes The Lego Car Blog back to its roots, with two brilliant fully functional large scale vehicles.

First up is Srecko Mimica‘s hot rod pick-up. Under the minimalist Technic bodywork sits a highly detailed V8 engine, working gearbox, steering and suspension, plus a list of Power Functions goodies including RC drive and steering and working turn signals. Our second Technic model was brought to our attention via the Feedback page and can be found on Eurobricks. Built by desert752 it features slightly odd Ferrari-ish ‘System’ bodywork over a Technic chassis, but what a chassis it is! Contained within are eight Power Functions motors that power the drive, steering, pneumatic gearbox, air-suspension and a weird ‘acceleration boost’ function that we really can’t figure out. Lego Ferrari F1 2014

It’s nearly here! The 2014 Formula 1 season is almost upon us, and Nathanael L is getting is us ready with his excellent Model Team version of Ferrari’s 2014 title challenger.

Replicating the real Ferrari F14 T, Nathanael has included all of the new regulation-changed aspects of the 2014 cars;

First up is the new power-train, a 1.6 litre V6 turbo with an energy recovery system. Suddenly the Toyota Prius just got a little bit cooler eh? This we like, although we’d like it more still if Formula 1 allowed a free reign in engine capacity, induction and fuel type, much like Le Mans does. Note to Bernie Ecclestone: If you want to encourage more than three engine manufacturers into the sport you’ve got to give them freedom to work to their strengths.

Next, the exhaust must exit high and centrally, with the lower plain of the rear wing removed. This means no more ‘blown diffusers’, and a headache for Red Bull.

The last of the key changes to the regulations for this year sees the front wings narrow and the nose drop, with the aim of reducing downforce and also reducing the chances of a car riding over the top of another in an impact. This, we don’t like. Safety is a good thing, but if the result is the world’s ugliest race car (and there have been no injuries or deaths from an incident of the type aimed at being prevented for decades) perhaps there’s a better way to improve it. The Ferrari F14 T actually has a reasonably elegant solution compared to many of the other cars on the grid, but will it be quick?

Finally, there will be double points awarded in the last race of the season, because – as far as we can tell – Bernie Ecclestone has gone quite mad.

The action starts in Melbourne, Australia on the 14th of March. Will Sebastien Vettel continue his dominance? Will the new turbocharged engines blow up? Will Bernie be jailed for his fraud and corruption charges? Only one month to go!

Lego Ferrari 312

The Elves are a bit grumpy this morning, as this post wasn’t found by them, but by one of our readers. Still, they should’ve been quicker. Alexander Paschoaletto is a previous ‘Featured TFOL’ here at TLCB, and he joins us as a Guest Blogger to explain his find:

If you’re looking for amazing recreations of remarkable Le Mans cars, then Greg 998 must be in your favorite builders list. From iconic Porsches to historic Ferraris, Greg knows how to ally functions to design.

His latest model, the great Ferrari 312 P(b) in 1:8 scale, features both steering and suspension. Not only this, he also made it according to the original colours and stickers! Having built the ’71 model myself and knowing how difficult is it to keep the proportions, I can only hope to be as skilled as him in the future. Keep building, Greg!

Lego Alfa Romeo 8C 2600

This is the latest work of racing car genius Bob Alexander and it is, put simply, the most utterly beautiful Lego car we’ve ever seen.

First built in 1931, the Alfa Romeo 8C spearheaded the Italians’ assault on all of the major motor races of the 1930s. Bob’s incredible Lego recreation shown here is the 2600 Scuderia Ferrari version from 1933, driven by Italy’s Tazio Nuvolari and France’s Raymond Sommer. In their hands the 8C won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in ’33, adding a third consecutive Le Mans win to Alfa’s trophy cabinet.

The 8C continued to star in Europe’s motor races until 1938, when the outbreak of war halted everything, and pitched previously collaborative nations, including the winning pair of drivers from 1933, against each another in combat.

You may be wondering why there’s a Ferrari shield on the side of the 8C. Well Enzo Ferrari started out by running racing cars for existing manufacturers like Alfa Romeo before deciding to build his own cars after the Second World War. If you want to see where it all started for Ferrari, this car is that moment.

The Alfa Romeo 8C is therefore one of the most special racing cars ever made, and Bob’s astonishing Lego recreation is a wonderfully fitting tribute to one of the world’s greats. See all the photos on Flickr via the link above.

We kick off the new year in style with an incredible supercar; Sariel‘s new Technic Ferrari Enzo. His latest work features Power Functions remote control drive and steering, a lifelike V12 engine, fully independent suspension, pneumatically opening doors and a remotely controlled 4-speed gearbox. Lego Burnout Revenge

Here at The Lego Car Blog we post a huge variety of creations from the several different sources to where our Elves have been sent. But that doesn’t stop a few builders featuring here every other week it seems!

Senator Chinchilla is one of them, producing stunning vehicles at lightning speed. This week’s is a recreation of the ‘Factory R190 GT’ from the classic video game ‘Burnout Revenge’. See all the pictures on Flickr here, by which time he’ll probably have built something new.

After interviewing Jens M (one half of the due LegoExotics) last week, we saw a teaser picture of his latest project, and here it is finished.

Lego Ferrari 458 Italia GT3

Octan, LEGO’s fictional oil company since 1992, has seen a huge range of vehicles adorned with its livery over the years. From F1 cars to power boats, the list of sets and MOCs to include the iconic red and green colours is almost endless. None though, have looked as superb as this.

Built by TLCB’s current Master MOCers ‘LegoExotics’ (aka Sven B and Jens M) have recreated the mighty Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 race car in incredible detail. And then they’ve added the livery of the greatest fictional oil company ever. So right does their creation look that it would probably convince anyone outside of the Lego Community that it’s a copy of a genuinely sponsored racing car.

The result is that we have a new favourite car of the 2013, and LegoExotics are now perhaps the best active Model Team vehicle builders anywhere in the world.

Lego Ferrari 599XX

This amazing creation is the work of Lego-building duo Sven and Jens (aka LegoExotics) on Flickr, who have featured a few times here on The Lego Car Blog over the past two years. Their work almost always features a prancing horse on the front, and this might just be their best Ferrari yet. Based on the already brilliant 599, the Ferrari 599 XX Evo turned the volume up to a very Spinal Tap 11.
