Lego Trains 10233 Horizon Express Preview

Lego 10233 Train

Horizon Express new for 2013

LEGO Trains just get better! After a few years of pretty poor efforts, LEGO’s recent Train offering have been a proper return to form, and 2013 looks to continue the winning streak. This is the new Horizon Express, LEGO’s latest high-speed passenger train to fit the Town/City theme, and it’s a real step-up from the all-in-one moulding of the last one.

With 1341 pieces the TGV-orange Horizon Express pushes the target age up to over 14, and includes some lovely SNOT detailing. It also features a complete interior with 6 mini-figures and some new printed pieces to boot. However, all this extra brickery comes at a cost: No motors are included. That said, this set is probably aimed at the sort of builder who already has a few motors lying around, or wouldn’t think too much of buying some extras in order to animate it.

The 80cm long Horizon Express will reach stores in 2013, costing around £80 / $120. Now will LEGO launch a new station to go with it?…

But does it Transform?

Alex Wong's Optimus Prime

Alex Wong’s Optimus Prime

This, on the other hand, IS definitely a car. At least every so often. A nice 8-wide truck with enough room to fit two nice little minifigs.

You don’t believe it? Check out Alex Wong‘s MOCpages account, and you’ll be amazed.

Sir Badass of Badassery

Lego Mech

Nice – but what if it had TWO guns!

This is not a car. It’s not a truck, nor a plane, nor a spaceship. But it is sub-zero levels of cool, and it made the Elves stomp around the office, some with lampshades or bins on their heads, brandishing spatulas, tongs and other utensil-based weaponry.

Normally when a MOC stirs up feelings of long-suppressed free-will in the Elves we end up having to diffuse a riot, but today they’re so enamored with their find that they’ve been happily playing Robots all morning. So if you see one chunkily walk past you whilst you’re visiting Eurobricks, MOCpages or some-such site, wearing a bucket on its head and with tissue boxes on its feet, gently point it in the direction of anything vaguely robotic – you’ll make its day.

Oh, we nearly forgot! This ridiculously cool MOC is the work of Mr Elliott Feldman on MOCpages. There’s a full(ish) backstory and  a comprehensive gallery of the component parts. Check it out here.

Galactic Exploration

Capital Planetary Deployment Unit

Run out of space on Earth? Want to find yourself a new home? Then you need a Capital Planetary Deployment Unit. Built to colonize distant worlds, Pierre Fieschi‘s monstrous conception has been imagined down to the last detail. View Pierre’s incredible creation, and the artwork that goes alongside it, on Flickr.

Oh no – not another Porsche!

Porsche 911 3.2 CarreraWell this is just getting silly. Malte Dorowski’s going to need his own section at The Lego Car Blog, such is the regularity of his work appearing on these pages. But how could we not post this incredible Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet? And if you’re in any doubt of its brilliance, the GIF below should help…

6 Figures!

$100,000

…or about £1.38 in Pounds Sterling

Earlier this week we reached the magic 6 figure hits milestone! Which is roughly the population of the city of Flint, Michigan. That’s probably a bad example as Flint’s a dump, but nevertheless The Lego Car Blog team would like to say a large thank you to all of you, for your readership, comments and endorsement .

See you at a million!

A Tribute to Carroll Shelby

Shelby Cobra

Shelby Cobra by Zeto Vince

The iconic Shelby Cobra is certainly not the easiest car to be brickbuilt – surely one of the curviest vehicles ever. Building it in minifig scale is a nightmare – something only highly talented builders can think of: lichtblau – or ZetoVince.

Look at Zeto’s beefy Cobra – it must have been a big struggle to get it like this! The late Carroll Shelby (January 11, 1923 – May 10, 2012) to whom Zeto dedicates this MOC would have loved it.

Featured TFOL: Jon Treasure

Caterpillar Crane

Caterpillar PL-87; the world’s biggest claw machine. You should see the size of the stuffed animal.

This month’s Featured TFOL hails from MOCpages, where the Elves spotted him via his rather excellent construction equipment.

Jon Treasure started out not too far from ‘minifig-on-a-plate’ type builds (ergh – we know), then rapidly moved through medium scale military and vehicular builds. He’s now reaching the heights of super-complex large scale Technic creations that any AFOL would be proud to create, like the awesome Caterpillar PL-87 pictured above. Check out his MOCpage at the aforementioned link, it’s well worth a look.

Pocket-Sprung Space Travel

Mattress Harvester

Classic Space

A double post today, from MOCpages and Flickr. We had ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ on in TLCB Towers, and whilst a bit of a turkey, it got us in the mood for a Space post. Elves were duly dispatched and as were feeling generous we let two of them earn dinner. So, above we have David Roberts‘ rather lovely ‘Mattress Harvester’, imagined from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, and below we have legorobo‘s FX00, imagined from, er… his imagination. Enjoy readers.

Lego Spaceship

McQueen’s Motor

Porsche 908/02Malte Dorowski (or Mr. Porsche as we know him) returns with another incredible build. This 1970 Porsche 908/02 was raced by Steve McQueen at the 12 hours of Sebring, where it finished second. McQueen also used it as a camera car in his film ‘Le Mans’, based on the real event. The full gallery of pictures are available on both Flickr and MOCpages.

LEGO goes Social Media with ReBrick Beta!

Every so often we chuck one of The Lego Car Blog Elves over The LEGO Group’s perimeter wall in an effort to bring you inside stories. We’ve lost a few Elves to the guard dogs this way, but as they’re pretty cheap we think it’s worth it.

Anyhow, this week one of the Elves made it back out with some official LEGO Group news and only minor bite marks. Props to him. And the news is pretty exciting…

ReBrick

The LEGO Group are in a position that most other businesses would kill for; they are prolific in social media. Unofficial Lego-sharing websites and blogs have been running since before even YouTube, and contribute very much to the success of the company. It’s also fair to say LEGO, like all other large corporations, have been glacially slow in responding to the new way in which consumers communicate. Worse than that even, they’ve often tried to shut down social media outlets that refer to the brand name or imagery. Fine in 2002, not in 2012.

But the above stance is changing, and changing fast. The LEGO Group have not only finally recognised the role social media sites play in the success of their brand, they are actively endorsing them (The Lego Car Blog included!). As such they have created their own official social media site called ‘ReBrick‘, which links to the unofficial sites that many of you visit every week.

This is a landmark moment for LEGO, and social media more generally. ReBrick is only in ‘Beta’ mode currently, but we believe it’s the beginning of a whole new era in the relationship between The LEGO Group and their consumers.

Below is the official ReBrick statement from TLG:

ReBrick

We’d like to congratulate LEGO on their pioneering project, and we’d like to encourage you to join ReBrick and get posting (preferably articles from The Lego Car Blog!). You’ll also find us in the ‘Culture’ section of their ‘Brick Links’ page, which we’re rather pleased about!

Yellow Peril

Lego Hot Rod

The engine’s not big enough…

DrDesignZ made this after a long Dark Age. You don’t know of him? If he carries on like this, you will…

This is full RC, that engine is badass, and it’s yellow. We like yellow.

Twin Turbo Daf

Daf Racing Truck

We want to know where VFRacing gets his stickers from!

Discovered on the Eurobricks Forum, and resplendent in Daf Racing colours complete with all 729 sponsors, this Dakar Rally Truck by VFRacingTeam is a rather brilliant looking machine. It should be brilliant to drive too, being powered by a complex array of LEGO Power Functions kit and based on a chassis design by Efferman (which means it’s good!). Visit the Eurobricks forum for more.

The Horror…. The Horror…

UH- Huey

Bell UH-1 Huey

Apocalypse Now (another film we should have probably removed from the office DVD shelf before the Elves got hold of it) is one of the greatest war films ever made. The Bell UH-1 ‘Huey’ features prominently throughout (there’s a particularly memorable scene in the extended version where one stars alongside some Playboy Bunnies), having first seen combat in the Vietnam War. Legohaulic is the creator behind this superbly recreated mini-fig scale version. You can view more of his Huey on Flickr.
