Lego Fiat 500

LEGO have been doing fantastically well out of their expansion into officially licensed automotive partnerships. Fans love the sets, as they get a real-world car to build, and it’s great publicity for car manufacturers too – a child playing with a LEGO version of their product today may buy one for real when they grow up!

MINI, Volkswagen, Ferrari, Volvo, Porsche, McLaren, and most recently Caterham have all seen one or more of their vehicles recreated in Danish plastic, and the collaboration of saabfan2013 and Gabriele Zannotti would like to add another iconic car to LEGO’s officially licensed line-up.

This is, of course, the wonderful original Fiat 500 (or Cinquecento in Italian) which saabfan and Gabriele have recreated beautifully in LEGO form. Featuring opening doors, bonnet and engine lid, as well as a detailed interior, this little Fiat looks the prefect companion to the already released MINI Cooper and Volkswagen Beetle Creator sets available to buy today.

Lego Nissan 180SX

As you can imagine with a blog as ropey as this one, an Elven workforce held together with Pritt Stick, and our penchant for your Mom, we very much like objects of a slightly aesthetically-challenged nature here at TLCB. This is one such object, an absolutely brilliant Nissan 180SX drift pig by VovaRychkov. What the Nissan lacks in sleek looks we’re sure it more than makes up for in smokey sidewaysyness, and we know which we’d rather have. Lego BMW R60 Motorcycle

It’s double date night here at TLCB, and as it’s this writer’s turn to attend it’s looking like he’ll have to pay another girl at the bus stop. Or put a call into your Mom. Anyhoo, let’s put the evening conundrum aside because we have two wonderful Model Team motorbikes to share with you today.

First up (above) is this glorious classic BMW R60 by Flickr’s Maxime Cheng, who has recreated the original machine superbly using a mix of Technic and Model Team styles, easily becoming one of our favourite bikes of the year so far.

Today’s second ride (below) comes from Flickr’s Andre Pinto, with this fantastically ridiculous Harley Davidson ‘Bagger’. Although beautifully built it looks like an absolute pig to ride, but seeing as this writer might be calling up your Mom later let’s not dwell on that. You can see more of both bikes on Flickr via the links above – click the links to make the jump.

V12 Hot Rod

TLCB regular Senator Chinchilla returns with this classic hot rod.  Apparently, “There’s no replacement for displacement” and in this case the giant engine has displaced the bonnet* from the car’s body.  Speaking of which, the engine catches the eye but there are some nice curves at the rear too.  Click this link to the Senator’s Photostream to see more of this car and video of his working V12 Lego pneumatics motor, which sadly won’t fit in this car.

Okay, we’re muddling up our Gerry Anderson TV series in the title but then we’ve been a bit muddled with our approach to this MOC. When the TLCB Elves first saw this smoothly built, neatly photographed car on MOCpages they thought that it was one of Dave Slater’s LDD creations. As such, it wouldn’t meet our Submissions Guidelines. MOCpages can mangle images at times. Fortunately the Elves discovered some better quality pictures on Dave’s Flickr Photostream and so it was yellow Smarties all round!  This 2015 Stingray complements the 1969 version from the same builder, which we blogged two years ago.  Click the link in the text to see more views, the opening doors and the two cars together.

An Mg Racing Car

Not a product of the Morris Garages car builders but a Formula 1 racing car with a body made from lightweight magnesium. This car is yet another fascinating piece of auto-racing history from Greg_998 on Flickr. In the late 1960s Honda saved 80kg from the weight of their previous F1 car by giving its body a magnesium shell, instead of an aluminium one.

This author fondly remembers setting fire to strips of magnesium in chemistry lessons, something which is now probably banned under Elf & Safety. Magnesium burns at roughly 3,100°C, making it great for things such as distress flares, sparklers on bonfire night and those things that Boy Scouts start fires with. Tragically these properties make it an incredibly dangerous material to have built a car from if it crashes and catches fire. The Right Profile

Red has produced a monster-sized vintage racing car. Loosely based on a 1932 Alfa Romeo, this car has the aerodynamic streamlining that was all the fashion at the time smooth built in bricks. It also features working steering and an engine that uses so many ray-guns as greebles that it could almost be part of sci-fi SHIPtember.

Red has included multiple views in his uploads but we really liked the straight profile shots, which are an unusual way to present a MOC. Brute of a Ute

The LUGNuts group on Flickr is currently holding a dragster contest and Lino Martins has produced a souped-up ute in response. The “ute” is a classic vehicle of the Australian outback, like the pick-up in North America or the camionetta in South America. Holden still produce utes, despite having been subsumed into the General Motors empire. With an engine of 6.2l available as standard, we don’t think that you’d need to do much to make a great drag-racer of this car. It’s also the only car manufacturer’s website that we’ve visited with a button to press just listen to the engine noise. Fictional Ferrari

Lego Ferrari LMP1

Ferrari don’t currently make an LMP1 racer, but if they did we hope it would look a little something like this. Beautifully detailed inside and out this fictional Ferrari LMP1 endurance car is the work of BrickMonkey of Flickr, and it was suggested to us by a reader. There’s lots more to see, including some lovely photos revealing the chassis and engine detailing, at BrickMonkey’s photostream.

Lego Pierce Arrow XT Fire Truck

…You need a really big fire truck. A really big fire truck like this one, the enormous Pierce Arrow XT ‘Tiller Truck’ as used by the San Jose Fire Department.

This spectacular (and absolutely massive) replica of the Arrow XT has been built by Pavol Vanek of Flickr, and it’s one of the most impressive models that we’ve ever featured here at TLCB. Every detail of San Jose’s real truck has been captured brilliantly in Lego form, and Pavol’s model includes a wealth of functions too.

A tilting cab complete with a fully detailed six-seat interior sits above a working piston engine, the ladder can elevate, extend and turn – stabilised by functioning outriggers, both the tractor unit and trailer feature functioning steering, and every door, storage compartment and hatch opens.

Befittingly for such a humongous creation there’s a huge gallery of images available showing each aspect of the truck in greater detail – and we cannot recommend taking a look highly enough! Click this link to see more of Pavol’s incredible build, just prepare to be there a while!

Lego Scania 112M Truck

This neat classic Scania 112M truck complete with a huge dropside trailer and crane comes from previous bloggee and truck-building specialist Arian Janssens. Measuring over 100 studs long and built during September it probably qualifies for the current community bandwagon too*. Lego Model Team 5580 Highway Rig

5580. One of LEGO’s earliest attempts at a more advanced high detail vehicle, and one of the three founding sets of the Model Team line. One of our earliest Set Reviews too…

But time marcheth on and today 5580, whilst undoubtably still a lovely set, looks a bit basic, both against LEGO’s latest releases and against many of the creations that the online community is building. Cue serial bloggee Ralph Savelsberg, who has re-booted the classic 1988-1990 set for 2016.

Based a little more closely on a real truck (the Kenworth W900) and using LEGO’s latest parts, Ralph’s model has grown a bit when compared to the original, squeezing in more detail and looking a lot like the sort of model that you’ll find at a Legoland theme park.

Lego 21307 Caterham Seven Review

It’s finally here! After sending a crack team of commando Elves into The LEGO Company headquarters we are delighted to reveal the latest release from LEGO’s Ideas programme, the officially-licensed 21307 Caterham Seven 620R!

Designed by Carl Greatrix, and first featured here over 2 years ago, the design was picked up and backed by Caterham themselves, and in March of this year we revealed it had been chosen as the next official fan-designed LEGO set.

Joining the authorised sets from Ferrari, Ford, McLaren, Porsche, Mini, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and others, LEGO’s latest real-world replica looks every bit as good as we hoped it would.

Aimed at ages 12+ we’re expecting around 700 pieces from the set when it goes on sale later in the year, and it’s one set we can’t wait to review! Congratulations to Carl, who has seen his design go from a usual Flickr upload to an official LEGO set, and we’ll bring you more news on 21307 later in 2016!
