Party Like It’s 1999

Lego Technic Rally CarIt’s been a while since we featured a purely Technic car here at The Lego Car Blog, and even longer since we featured one in such a classic style – they’re getting hard to find these days. szecs aka lipko takes us back to 1999 with a beam-and-pin Rally Car suggested to us via the Feedback page. You can see the full gallery on Brickshelf via the link above.

New York New York

Lego Chrysler New YorkerThis wonderful Model Team 1968 Chrysler New Yorker was discovered by one of our Elves on MOCpages. Featuring opening doors, trunk and hood, plenty of detail, and yet still robust enough for an Elf to zoom around the office without fear of breaking it and being thrown outside by the ears, it’s the perfect blend of playability an aesthetics. Jonathan Derksen is the barista responsible, and you can see more of his New York classic on MOCpages here.

The Walking Dead

Lego The Walking DeadIt looks like the Zombie Apocalypse has reached LEGO City too. Luckily there’s a little plastic version of Daryl from The Walking Dead complete with his chopper to keep the other mini-figures safe from the hoarding undead. See more and show your appreciation at Project Azazel‘s photostream.

Real Rotator Wrecker

Lego Peterbilt tow truck

We’ve known Bricksonwheels for a while now, he was interviewed here on TLCB last week, and several of his models have appeared on these pages. So the Elves were pretty excited when he uploaded his latest masterpiece, a truly incredible 1:13 scale Peterbilt 379 Century Rotator Wrecker, a Tow Truck that looks more like the real Peterbilt than a Lego one

Weighing 9KG and utilising over 10,000 LEGO pieces BricksonWheels’ newest truck includes a fully functioning boom, working outriggers and fully wired winches. It’s also got possibly the coolest paint-job seen on any of his models so far, making it look like a giant Checker Cab. Check out what might be TLCB’s Truck of the Year on MOCpages and Flickr, where the full stats and complete gallery are available.

Red Square

Lego RoadsterSimple is best sometimes. Marcus Paul aka Er0l keeps it clean with his 6-wide red convertible. See more here.

Bioshock

Lego Bioshock Infinite AirshipThis beautiful ‘Security Zeppelin’ airship from the computer game Bioshock Infinite was recently uncovered on Flickr by one of our Elves. The builder is [Stijn Oom], and you can see more of his amazing recreation of the Irrational Games’ design by clicking his hyperlinked name.

31005 Construction Hauler – Set Review

31005 comp

A lot of modern Lego is focused on licensed products. These sets can be a great way of introducing children to the fun of building something from Lego. Unfortunately there are normally instructions for just one model, which often isn’t rebuilt into anything else. If you’re looking for old-style models, built from lots of bricks and with alternative models, then the Creator sets are for you.

One of the elves’ favourite Creator sets is the 31005 Construction Hauler. They’ve been clambering onto the desk at TLCB towers to play with it, when they should be out scouring the internet for MOCs. Elves have been busily driving the low-loader around and then using the digger to shovel paperclips about. Sadly, an elf has also been seen wearing one of the traffic cones on his head.

The first thing to be built is the cute little JCB-type digger. With a fully articulated backhoe and front loader, this small vehicle has lots of play potential and would be a great pocket money set in its own right. Unfortunately it has the weakest bit of design of any of the builds. The backhoe is attached via a 2×1 hook plate, which might not withstand the pulling and pushing of vigorous play.

Digger Comp

The Tractor unit takes 32 pages of instructions to build and is packed with lots of lovely little details, such as wing mirrors, fuel tanks, sun visor, air-horns, lights and side mounted wind deflectors. Not bad for a 4-wide which is about 11 studs long and a great way to get young builders thinking about the sort of details that they could include in their MOCs. The finished unit feels solid in the hand and is sturdy enough to be zoomed across carpets or off the edge of desks… Continue reading

’70s Haulage

Lego Scania LB 141 TruckThis classic Scania LB 141 is the work of the brilliant Norton74 on Flickr. Complete with a tilting cab to reveal the detailed V8 engine and a full tan interior it’s one of the nicest trucks uploaded in 2013 thus far. Norton has a rapidly expanding portfolio of fantastic trucks on his Flickr photstream. Check them out here.

Pod Race

Lego Star Wars Pod RacerThe Pod Race in Star Wars Episode 1, complete with F1 cars dubbed into the sound effects, was a pretty spectacular part of the movie. It almost made up for the crushing disappointment of Jar Jar Binks failing to be sucked into one of Anakin’s podracer engines in a previous scene. Legopard on MOCpages recreates one of the racers from the movie with his KV9T9-B Wasp Podracer, on which the engine detailing alone blew our minds. See why at the link above.

Blockbuster – 4th July Special

Lego Independence DayWelcome dear Lego Car Blog reader, to our 4th July Blockbuster Special!

In celebration of the independence of the United States of America this 4th July we thought we’d bring you a selection of models linked (one a little tenuously) to some of the biggest American blockbuster films of recent times. So grab some popcorn and enjoy the ride…

No Independence Day list would be complete without the 1996 film epic of the same name. There were no real star cars in the movie, that role was very much fulfilled by the alien spaceships, so instead we have Lino M‘s superb 4th July themed Divco van. Lino is one of the car-building heroes of the Lego Community, and you can check out both him and his van on Flickr.

Lego Jurassic ParkNext up come two of the star vehicles from one of the biggest films of the nineties, Steven Spielberg’s incredible 1993 tale of the world’s most dangerous theme park. Legohaulic‘s two SUVs played a pivotal role in the story, one suffering a painful trip through a tree, whilst the driver of the other came to unfortunate end via the teeth of some prehistoric lizards. See more of Legohaulic’s creations on Flickr via the link above.

Lego Duel TruckThird in our Independence Day Special is both a builder and movie that have appeared on these pages before, but when a model’s this good we don’t mind. Duel was one of Spielberg’s earlier works and was deliciously simple in its format; a sales rep being chased by an aggrieved trucker across the desert. TLCB favourite Karwik recreates the famous Peterbilt tanker from the 1971 classic in fantastic detail. See more at his page via the link.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our 4th July Special. As always, let us know your thoughts, suggestions and abuse via the Feedback page, and we’ll see you tomorrow. That’s all folks!

Bonus:

Well, apart from this. Suggested to us by a reader, it’s not really TLCB fodder, but a cowboy firing two pistols in the air is about as American as you can get, so it fits beautifully in today’s Special. We do also feature the occasional weapon of mass destruction here at TLCB, and Nick Barrett’s Yosemite S.A.M is more than just a cartoon character… Find out why on MOCpages.

Newton’s Balls

Lego Science Vessel SpacecraftThis beautiful spacecraft was uncovered on Flickr earlier in the week. Built by the fantastically talented Pierre E Fieschi it reminds us of the Newton’s Cradle desk ornament, which in turn (and because we have the minds of children), makes us think that Sir Isaac Newton had an enormous pair of pendulous testicles. See more (of the spaceship, not Sir Isaac’s gentleman’s area – although it’s probably on Google somewhere) on Flickr via the link above.

Hump Day Rally Special

Lego Lancia Delta IntegraleWhat with it being Hump Day (Wednesday is the ‘hump’ of the week) we thought we’d find a tenuous link to vehicles good over humps, and nothing is better than a rally car when things get humpy.

Both today’s rally cars use LEGO’s excellent RC components to give them drive and steering, both are legends in their own right, but they come from very different rallying eras.

First up (above) is a breathtakingly brilliant Lancia Delta Integrale by Tiago C on Brickshelf. The Delta won an astonishing 46 World Rallies, taking Lancia to six consecutive World Championships and a record which remains to this day.

Next we have one of the new stars of the World Rally and Rally-Cross Championships, Ford’s monster Fiesta, in -as it happens- Monster energy drink livery. The work of Piterx, you can see more photos and join the discussion on Eurobricks.

Lego Technic Ford Fiesta WRCAnd finally, the only thing that gets close to a rally car over the rough stuff is a trial truck. They may be slow, but the humps they can clear are truly enormous. So as a Hump Day bonus here’s Jorge Garcia‘s Tatra Kolos 8×8, also featuring remote control, clearing two humps. You can see the full gallery of the 8×8 in action on MOCpages.

S*** Happens

Lego Crappy DayTyler aka Legohaulic‘s e-mote, entitled ‘Crappy Day’, made us smile today. We hope it does the same for you too. Let Tyler know on Flickr.

Big MAN

Lego MAN TruckA monster truck today, from Nanko Paste on Flickr. His Model Team MAN TGX wrecker features a working compressor and pneumatic under-lift as well as a full suit of interior and exterior details. See more at the link.

Brave Heart

Lego Rescue Ship ERRV Grampian DonThis astonishing creation is a 1.25 meter long replica of the Northern Star rescue boat ‘Grampian Don’, built by the immensely talented Konajra on Flickr. Konajra designed the ship in LDD, before building it for real from over 15,000 LEGO pieces.

Based in Aberdeen, Scotland, the Grampian Don supports the North Sea oil exploration platforms, providing emergency rescue response for the hundreds of North Sea oil workers. To see more of this amazing creation visit Konajra’s Flickr page at the link above, or join in the discussion Eurobricks here.
